  • CDS General Anil Chauhan briefed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on military responses after the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 dead.

  • NIA intensified its probe at the terror site with teams questioning eyewitnesses and investigating cross-border linkages to Pakistan.

In the wake of the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Sunday, April 27, 2025. This high-level meeting focused on reviewing the key military strategies and steps taken after the brutal incident that has reignited nationwide concerns over cross-border terrorism.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22 around 2:00 PM at the Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination near Pahalgam, resulted in the death of 26 individuals, including one Nepalese national. Many of the victims were innocent tourists enjoying the serene valley, making the attack even more shocking and heart-wrenching.

Authorities confirmed that it was one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

Following the attack, teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) swung into action. Senior officers, including an IG, DIG, and SP, have been stationed at Pahalgam since April 23. These teams have intensified investigations, questioning eyewitnesses, gathering forensic evidence, and analyzing the nature of the attack to establish possible cross-border linkages.

Simultaneously, Indian Army units in the region have been placed on high alert. Multiple search and combing operations are underway to track and neutralize the terrorists responsible. The military’s posture has shifted towards heightened vigilance along the Line of Control (LoC) to preempt any further infiltration or attacks.

The Pahalgam incident has sparked widespread protests across India, with citizens demanding a tough stance against Pakistan. The public outrage reflects the deep-rooted anger against terror emanating from across the border and calls for tangible and swift governmental action.

CCS Meeting and Strategic Diplomatic Measures:

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened a critical meeting on April 23. During the session, the members were briefed on the terrorist attack in detail. Discussions highlighted the cross-border linkages of the perpetrators and emphasized that the attack came amid Jammu and Kashmir’s political stabilization and economic resurgence — factors that terror elements seek to destabilize.

The CCS strongly condemned the terrorist act and expressed condolences to the victims' families while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

In a strong diplomatic move, India announced that it would withdraw its Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Effective May 1, 2025, these military advisory posts will be annulled. Alongside, five support staff associated with the Defence Services Advisors will also be withdrawn.

With these measures, the overall strength of both countries' high commissions will be reduced from 55 to 30 personnel. This step signifies a downgrade in diplomatic engagement, reflecting India's dissatisfaction and anger over Pakistan's continued support for terror activities targeting Indian civilians.

Security Alert and Measures Ahead:

In light of the recent events, all security forces operating in Jammu and Kashmir have been instructed to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards terror. Search operations, intelligence gathering, and area domination patrols have been stepped up across sensitive regions.

The focus has also shifted towards securing tourist spots, religious places, and other crowded public areas, considering the nature of the Pahalgam attack, which specifically targeted an area popular with tourists.

Moreover, cyber surveillance and cross-border intelligence monitoring have been enhanced to track communications and funding channels fueling such terror acts.

Nationwide Reactions and Political Responses:

Political leaders across party lines have condemned the attack, with many urging the central government to take decisive steps against Pakistan. Leaders have emphasized the need for robust international engagement to expose Pakistan’s terror infrastructure globally.

Meanwhile, civil society groups, veterans, and security analysts have stressed the necessity of tightening internal security mechanisms and promoting local cooperation in sensitive districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Conclusion:

The meeting between CDS General Anil Chauhan and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh marks a pivotal point in India's counter-terror strategy following the Pahalgam attack. With NIA's probe underway, army vigilance heightened, and diplomatic ties with Pakistan being scaled down, India is demonstrating its intent to respond firmly and decisively.

The coming weeks will be crucial as authorities attempt to neutralize the threat, bring perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety and confidence of citizens, especially in the border states. The nation stands united in grief but also in its resolve against terror.
