On Thursday, the Indian Army firmly dismissed reports alleging a ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir. In an official statement, the army clarified that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan continues to be observed in full, in line with the understanding reached between both armies.
The statement came after media reports suggested unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district. However, the Indian Army reassured that no heavy-caliber weapons had been used, and minor incidents such as cross-LoC firing and a suspected IED blast had been addressed via the established communication mechanisms between the two nations' military authorities.
The Indian Army emphasized that while minor incidents are not uncommon along the LoC, they remain committed to ensuring stability in the region. The army also stated that concerns over the situation had been raised to the Pakistan Army at the appropriate level, further stressing the importance of maintaining a stable environment along the border.
Earlier, reports had emerged claiming that Pakistani forces had violated the ceasefire by firing on Indian positions along the LoC in Poonch district. While the Indian Army did not confirm or deny these claims, they did respond effectively to the incident, and the extent of the damage on the Pakistan side remained unclear. There were reports of heavy casualties on the Pakistani side, but no official figures have been provided by the Indian Army.
This latest incident followed the tragic loss of two Indian Army personnel, including a Captain, in an IED blast near the LoC in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu district. The attack was suspected to have been carried out by terrorists near the border. Despite these incidents, ceasefire violations along the LoC have been rare since both countries renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.
The Indian Army has assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and that they are maintaining a high state of alertness along the LoC. Tensions may flare up from time to time due to minor incidents, but the army remains confident that the truce will hold, as it continues to be enforced by both nations' military forces.
