Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu recently opened up about the fascinating origin of his friendship with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Naidu revealed that their bond started from an initial refusal to meet during the 1990s.
Naidu recalled that when Gates visited New Delhi, officials told him Gates was busy and uninterested in meeting politicians. However, Naidu was determined to share his ideas with Gates. When Gates invited him to a cocktail party, Naidu declined due to the stigma around attending such events at that time.
Despite the challenges, Gates agreed to a brief 10-minute meeting. Naidu spent a week preparing a detailed presentation focusing on India’s strengths, which impressed Gates. When asked how he could help, Naidu asked Gates to believe in India and not forget Indians. He suggested Hyderabad as a location for Microsoft’s first development centre outside Seattle, a suggestion that became reality in 1998.
What was meant to be a 10-minute meeting extended to 45 minutes, followed by further discussions in Seattle. Naidu described how this interaction helped cultivate a strong friendship with Gates, who recently visited again for an important meeting.
Naidu also shared details of their new collaboration through the Gates Foundation, focusing on health, agriculture, and education. In healthcare, they aim to create a fully online system with real-time monitoring and AI integration. Naidu said this project would be a gamechanger, transforming healthcare delivery.
This partnership highlights Naidu’s vision for leveraging technology to drive progress in India and strengthen key sectors for sustainable development.
