The political battle for the Vice President’s post intensified today as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed his party’s support to the NDA’s candidate Radhakrishnan, brushing aside Congress’s appeal to support Sudershan Reddy, the INDIA bloc’s nominee.

Naidu, while making the announcement, said, “We are very happy to extend our support to him. He will bring pride to the nation.” This endorsement cements the TDP’s alignment with the NDA at a crucial juncture, with the Vice Presidential election expected to be a tightly contested affair between the ruling alliance and the opposition bloc.

The Congress had recently reached out to Naidu, highlighting that their candidate Sudershan Reddy hails from Telangana and that his candidature represented Telugu pride. However, Naidu made it clear that his party’s stand was firmly with the NDA, underlining his trust in Radhakrishnan’s ability to serve as a national leader.

This decision carries significant weight in national politics, as the TDP commands strong influence in Andhra Pradesh and is a key NDA ally. By rejecting the Congress appeal, Naidu has not only reaffirmed his loyalty to the NDA but also weakened the INDIA bloc’s attempt to consolidate southern support.

For the NDA, the TDP’s support further strengthens the numerical comfort it enjoys in the Vice Presidential election. Radhakrishnan, who has been projected as a candidate with a clean image and strong credentials, now has the backing of not only the BJP but also influential allies like the TDP, ensuring greater momentum in the campaign.

The Congress, however, is expected to continue pushing the Telugu identity factor, especially in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, in an attempt to rally sentiment behind Sudershan Reddy. Yet, the rejection from Naidu signals that regional parties may prioritise long-term national alliances over short-term symbolic gestures.

The upcoming Vice Presidential election is being seen as more than just a contest for a constitutional post. It is also shaping up as a test of political alliances, opposition unity, and the strength of the NDA coalition. Naidu’s endorsement of Radhakrishnan is therefore not just symbolic but also a strategic move that aligns his party closely with the ruling front.

As the election day approaches, the spotlight will remain on how alliances hold and how both camps mobilise support. For now, Naidu’s decision has given the NDA candidate Radhakrishnan a decisive edge, while leaving the opposition bloc to rethink its campaign strategy.
