  1. BJP and TMC MLAs clashed in the Bengal Assembly during a heated debate on attacks on Bengali migrants, leading to a stormy session.

  2. BJP’s chief whip Shankar Ghosh and four other MLAs, including Agnimitra Paul, were suspended following the violent scuffle.

  3. Mamata Banerjee accused BJP of being anti-Bengali, corrupt, and dictatorial while asserting TMC will fight to protect Bengal’s dignity.

The West Bengal Assembly witnessed unprecedented chaos and disorder on Thursday, with legislators of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaging in a heated confrontation over alleged atrocities against Bengali migrants in states governed by the BJP. The stormy session not only disrupted the legislative proceedings but also resulted in the suspension of five BJP MLAs, including the party’s chief whip.

BJP MLAs suspended after heated clash

The clash intensified after BJP’s chief whip Shankar Ghosh sustained injuries during the scuffle. Despite being suspended for the remainder of the day for disorderly conduct, Ghosh refused to leave the House, compelling marshals to intervene. The tension escalated further when sloganeering erupted from both sides, transforming the Assembly into a political battleground.

Alongside Ghosh, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul was also suspended. Speaker Biman Banerjee called in women marshals to escort her out of the chamber after she refused to comply with the suspension order. Additionally, Ashok Dinda, Bamkin Ghosh, and Mihir Goswami were also suspended, bringing the total suspensions to five BJP legislators.

The BJP, however, countered the action, alleging that water bottles were hurled at them from the treasury benches, worsening the disorder inside the House.

Mamata Banerjee lashes out at BJP

Reacting to the developments, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the saffron party. She accused the BJP of being against discussions on issues of Bengali migrants facing attacks in BJP-ruled states.

While clarifying that she is “not against Hindi,” Banerjee alleged that the BJP is fundamentally anti-Bengali and seeks to suppress the identity and dignity of the people of West Bengal. She declared:

“BJP is a party of the corrupt, a party of vote thieves. They are the biggest dacoit party. They have a dictatorial and colonial mindset, and they want to turn Bengal into their colony.”

She further alleged that the BJP uses central forces like the CISF to harass opposition MPs, citing past incidents in Parliament.

Political war of words intensifies

The Chief Minister’s remarks sparked further uproar, as she predicted that the BJP would soon face political downfall, both in the state and at the Centre.

Banerjee said:
“Mark my words, a day will come when not a single BJP MLA will sit in this House. People will throw you out of power. The Modi and Amit Shah-led government at the Centre will collapse soon.”

Her statements echoed TMC’s broader political narrative of portraying the BJP as a threat to regional identity and federalism.

Broader political context

The clash reflects the increasingly hostile relationship between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal’s political landscape. With the 2026 state elections inching closer, both parties are intensifying their campaigns and rhetoric.

  • For the BJP, highlighting issues such as law and order and migration forms the core of its strategy to challenge the ruling party.

  • For the TMC, emphasizing Bengali identity, federal rights, and resistance against central dominance remains central to its counter-narrative.

The suspension of five BJP MLAs, including prominent leaders like Agnimitra Paul, may deepen the rift further, with the BJP expected to stage protests inside and outside the Assembly in the coming days.

Conclusion

The West Bengal Assembly clash is more than just a legislative disruption; it underscores the sharp political polarization in the state. The incident highlights how identity politics, migrant issues, and accusations of authoritarianism are shaping the TMC-BJP rivalry.

As the situation unfolds, the clash is likely to fuel political confrontations on the ground, with both parties attempting to consolidate their support base by portraying themselves as the defenders of Bengal’s interests. The Assembly, which is meant to serve as a forum for governance and policymaking, has once again turned into a stage for political confrontation and spectacle.
