A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Antofagasta, Chile, on Thursday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The quake, which occurred 84 km northwest of Calama, sent tremors throughout the region but has not yet resulted in reports of significant damage or injuries.

The earthquake struck at approximately 6:37 AM Chilean time and was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers. Social media users shared unverified videos claiming to show prolonged tremors from the event, but these have not been confirmed as CCTV footage. Despite the visible impact of the earthquake on some areas, authorities have not issued any warnings or reports regarding a tsunami, and there have been no immediate accounts of damage in the affected region.

Previous Seismic Activity in Chile

This earthquake follows a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Chile in November, with no major damage or injuries reported at the time. Chile has experienced significant seismic activity in the past, as it lies in the Ring of Fire—a region particularly prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the tectonic plates' movements.

Chile’s vulnerability to earthquakes is further underscored by the devastating 2010 magnitude 8.8 earthquake, which triggered a tsunami and led to the deaths of 526 people. These frequent seismic occurrences are a painful reminder of Chile’s susceptibility to natural disasters, particularly along its coastline.
