The group has long sought independence for the Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.

In August, the BLA executed coordinated attacks within the province that resulted in the deaths of over 70 people. The group has a history of targeting Chinese interests in the region, particularly focusing on the strategic Gwadar port along the Arabian Sea. The BLA accuses China of collaborating with Islamabad to exploit the province's resources.
