What's Covered Under the Article:

  • China is actively engaging with India to resume direct flights, halted for five years due to the pandemic and Eastern Ladakh tensions, with SCO summit expected to host official announcement.

  • Indian and Chinese officials, including Indian Consul General Pratik Mathur and China Eastern Airlines executives, discussed civil aviation, tourism, and hospitality sector growth.

  • India and China are gradually normalising bilateral relations, with boundary talks between Wang Yi and NSA Ajit Doval, and revival of dialogue mechanisms agreed by Modi and Xi in Kazan.

China has confirmed ongoing discussions with India to restore direct flight services, potentially ending a five-year hiatus in air connectivity between the two nations. The resumption of flights, suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the military standoff in Eastern Ladakh, would be a major step toward boosting people-to-people ties, tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that an official announcement on the matter is anticipated during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, scheduled for August 31 to September 1, 2025, in Tianjin. He emphasized that China has been in close communication with India to promote the early resumption of direct flights, facilitating cross-border travel and cooperation between the countries, which together have a population of over 2.8 billion.

Indian officials are also actively involved in the process. Indian Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, recently met with the senior management of China Eastern Airlines, led by Shen Jinsong, to discuss growth opportunities in civil aviation and hospitality sectors. Travel and tourism companies in Shanghai have expressed keen interest in the potential revival of air services between the two nations.

China Eastern Airlines and Air China previously operated daily flights to several Indian cities, including Delhi, but services were halted due to the pandemic and strained relations following the Eastern Ladakh standoff. The proposed resumption is seen as a signal of gradually normalising India-China relations.

In parallel, China and India continue high-level diplomatic interactions. Reports indicate that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on August 18 to attend the Special Representatives talks. The boundary discussions between Wang Yi and Indian NSA Ajit Doval are part of ongoing efforts to revive dialogue mechanisms following decisions by PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia.

Lin Jian reiterated that China is committed to working with India to maintain political mutual trust, enhance practical cooperation, manage differences, and promote sustained, sound, and steady development of bilateral ties. The resumption of direct flights is expected to strengthen cooperation in aviation, trade, tourism, and people-to-people engagement, marking a positive milestone in India-China relations.
