China has made notable strides in simplifying the visa process for Indian citizens, issuing over 85,000 visas as of April 9, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Chinese government to encourage more Indian visitors and improve travel relations between the two countries. In a recent statement, Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, expressed his enthusiasm, welcoming Indian travelers to explore a "vibrant, sincere, and friendly" China.
The visa relaxations include removal of mandatory online appointments, biometric data exemption for short stays, faster processing times, and a reduction in visa fees. These changes have made it easier and quicker for Indian nationals to travel to China, promoting stronger bilateral ties and tourism.
The simplification of the visa process is one of several steps China has taken to attract more Indian tourists. Previously, in March 2025, the Chinese Ambassador mentioned that 50,000 visas had already been issued, signaling an increase in travel demand. The easing of visa norms, coupled with ongoing diplomatic discussions, reflects the efforts both nations are making to foster better relations and increase exchanges between their citizens.
In addition to the new visa rules, China and India have also resumed direct air services, which had been suspended for nearly five years due to strained relations. This agreement, reached in January 2025, is a significant milestone in the journey to enhance connectivity and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Despite past tensions between India and China, particularly following the 2020 border clash, the relationship has seen substantial improvement. With agreements in place to resolve military standoffs and renewed diplomatic discussions, the outlook for increased travel between the two countries is optimistic.
As part of its ongoing efforts, China is also promoting tourism through various embassy initiatives, encouraging Indian travelers to explore the country’s rich culture, history, and vibrant cities. With these recent visa changes and diplomatic strides, China is poised to welcome even more Indian tourists in the coming months.
