In a significant diplomatic development, China has condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead, including tourists. Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Huo Jiakun strongly condemned the attack, expressing China's firm opposition to all forms of terrorism. The spokesperson also extended China's heartfelt condolences to the victims, offering sympathy to the bereaved families and the injured.
The attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, in the serene Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, has left the region in mourning. What was once a popular tourist destination has now become a somber site, following the tragic loss of life. The Indian government has expressed its determination to take stern measures against the perpetrators of this heinous act.
In response to the attack, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened a high-level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to assess the overall security situation in the country. The meeting focused specifically on the Pahalgam terror attack, where the CCS strongly condemned the incident. The committee also extended its condolences to the victims’ families and expressed hope for the swift recovery of the injured. During the meeting, the government reaffirmed its commitment to bringing those responsible for terrorism to justice, drawing attention to recent efforts such as the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, highlighting its uncompromising stance in the fight against terrorism.
Following the tragic event, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced a series of five major measures to show India’s resolve in responding to the attack:
-
Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty: The long-standing water-sharing agreement with Pakistan has been temporarily halted.
-
Visa suspension for Pakistani nationals: Pakistan nationals will no longer be issued SAARC visas.
-
Closure of the Attari border: The border crossing with Pakistan has been closed as part of the heightened security response.
-
Withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Pakistan: India is pulling out its diplomats from the High Commission in Islamabad.
-
Revocation of existing SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas: Pakistani nationals holding these visas will be required to leave India within 48 hours.
These steps reflect India’s firm stance on the issue, aiming to hold those responsible for acts of terrorism accountable. The government's response underscores its commitment to confronting terrorism, reinforcing the message that such attacks will not go unchallenged.
China’s condemnation of the attack is a significant diplomatic gesture, aligning with its longstanding position on opposing terrorism in all forms. This also highlights the complex nature of international diplomacy, where nations express solidarity in times of tragedy while also navigating sensitive geopolitical dynamics.
The Pahalgam attack has also triggered increased security measures across India, with authorities reviewing security protocols at tourist destinations and key areas of interest. While the government continues its efforts to ensure justice, the attack has deepened the ongoing security concerns in the region, particularly in areas with heavy tourist traffic.
As the situation evolves, both India and China are expected to continue their respective diplomatic responses, with China likely to focus on broader international efforts against terrorism while India emphasizes the need for strong action against those who carry out such attacks.
