  • Cloudbursts in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts have left families feared trapped under debris, triggering large-scale rescue and relief operations.

  • Heavy rains led to road closures, rising river levels, and missing persons in Chamoli, with authorities urging people to avoid riverbanks.

  • IMD has issued an orange alert for multiple Uttarakhand districts, predicting very heavy rainfall and worsening flood situations across the state.

The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand is once again facing nature’s fury as cloudbursts struck Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts, leading to widespread destruction, fears of casualties, and the trapping of several families under debris. The calamity, reported on Friday morning, has intensified the monsoon chaos in the region, which has already been battling flash floods, landslides, and road blockages for weeks.

Families Feared Trapped in Chamoli and Rudraprayag

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that multiple families are feared trapped under rubble in the affected areas. In a post on social media platform 'X', he stated that cloudbursts were reported in Bareth Dungar Tok area of Buskedar tehsil in Rudraprayag and in Deval area of Chamoli. He assured that relief and rescue operations are underway on a war footing by the local administration, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other agencies.

Dhami emphasized that he has been in constant touch with district magistrates and disaster management authorities, issuing directives to speed up the rescue efforts. He also expressed prayers for the safety of all those affected.

Missing People and Road Blockages

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that two people are missing, while several animals were buried under debris after the cloudburst in Deval. Heavy rainfall has led to road closures, hampering the immediate arrival of rescue teams. However, local authorities managed to reach the site, and efforts to clear blocked routes are ongoing.

In Rudraprayag, police officials issued warnings to the public about the rising water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. The administration has urged residents to stay away from riverbanks and relocate to safer zones.

Uttarakhand Reeling Under Monsoon Mayhem

The latest disaster adds to a string of weather-related crises Uttarakhand has faced this monsoon. Torrential rains have caused flash floods and landslides in several regions, including Dharali, Uttarkashi, Tharali, and Pauri. The natural calamities have claimed multiple lives, destroyed infrastructure, and displaced many families.

Chief Minister Dhami, who recently visited disaster-hit areas in Uttarkashi, has announced relief packages for affected people. However, with the intensity of rainfall showing no signs of abating, challenges continue to mount for state authorities and local residents.

IMD’s Weather Alerts for Uttarakhand

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts of Uttarakhand, including Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar, predicting very heavy rainfall on Friday. Alongside this, a yellow alert has been issued for other districts such as Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, Haridwar, Almora, and Nainital, where heavy rainfall is expected.

Authorities fear that continued rain may lead to more landslides, cloudbursts, and flooding, making rescue and relief operations more challenging in remote Himalayan terrains.

The Human Impact of Cloudbursts

Cloudbursts are sudden, intense rainfall events common in mountainous regions like Uttarakhand. They often trigger flash floods, landslides, and large-scale destruction within minutes, leaving little time for residents to react. In villages where houses are built on steep slopes or near rivers, the risks are particularly severe.

The current incidents in Chamoli and Rudraprayag are reminders of the vulnerability of Himalayan settlements to extreme weather. Families are often trapped in debris flows, livestock is lost, and vital road networks are cut off, isolating entire communities.

Government and Rescue Response

The Uttarakhand government has activated its emergency response teams, including SDRF, NDRF, local police, and administrative officials. Relief materials are being mobilized, and rescue teams are working to clear blocked roads. Helicopter assistance may also be considered if weather permits.

Chief Minister Dhami’s office is monitoring the situation closely, while district administrations have been instructed to set up relief camps and provide necessary assistance, including food, shelter, and medical help, to displaced families.

Looking Ahead: Monsoon Challenges

With the IMD’s orange alert in place, experts fear the possibility of further disasters in the coming days. The fragile ecology of Uttarakhand makes it highly susceptible to natural calamities. Environmentalists have repeatedly highlighted the impact of deforestation, unregulated construction, and climate change, which amplify the risks of cloudbursts and floods.

The government is expected to assess the damages after rescue operations stabilize the situation, but the immediate priority remains saving lives and preventing further tragedies.
