Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Thursday, April 24, 2025, visited Kanpur to pay tribute to Shubham Dwivedi, one of the 26 victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for a strong response, occurred in the Baisaran valley area of Anantnag district, where tourists were targeted in a brutal assault.
Shubham, a 28-year-old software engineer, had been on a leisure trip to Kashmir with his newlywed wife. The couple had tied the knot just two months ago on February 11, and the trip was part of their post-marriage celebration. Tragically, while they were exploring the scenic valley, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists. Shubham was shot and killed on the spot, while his wife survived and is reportedly in shock.
Shubham was the only son in his family, and his sudden demise has left his parents and relatives devastated. On Wednesday night, his body was flown to Lucknow, where Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak paid his respects at the airport. The grief-stricken family received Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday morning, who offered floral tributes, conveyed his condolences, and assured all possible help from the state government.
The Chief Minister also had a telephonic conversation with Shubham’s father, Sanjay Dwivedi, earlier and expressed his sorrow over the irreparable loss. He prayed for strength for the bereaved family and said the entire state stood with them in this tragic moment.
This incident has not only shaken the Dwivedi family but has also led to widespread anger and grief across the nation. In Maharashtra, funerals were held for Sanjay Lele and Atul Mone, two more victims from Mumbai, and were attended by thousands of mourners. Emotional scenes were witnessed, with family members and locals recounting the horror of how the terrorists allegedly identified the victims by name before shooting them in cold blood.
As the nation mourns, many have called for accountability and a strong retaliatory action from the Indian government. Slogans demanding justice and retribution were raised in several states, with citizens urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take decisive steps, especially against Pakistan, which is being widely blamed for harboring the elements responsible for the attack.
In his brief address, CM Yogi Adityanath termed the attack a cowardly act, emphasizing that such incidents would not deter the country’s resolve. "The terrorists’ actions will not go unanswered," he said. "The country is united in grief and rage, and we will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice."
The attack has reignited debates around tourist safety in Jammu and Kashmir, which has seen phases of relative calm and periodic violence. The Pahalgam region, a popular spot among tourists for its natural beauty, has been one of the more peaceful regions in the valley. The latest attack, however, threatens to undermine the perception of normalcy in the region and could impact tourism significantly.
Political leaders across parties have condemned the attack, with demands for a review of internal security protocols. The Ministry of Home Affairs has reportedly begun a high-level probe, and intelligence agencies have been tasked with identifying the perpetrators. So far, no group has officially claimed responsibility, but officials suspect the hand of cross-border militants.
The Union Government has also assured that compensation and support will be extended to all families of the victims. A special fund is being discussed, and employment support for dependents is also on the cards. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir, especially in tourist areas.
For the Dwivedi family in Kanpur, however, these developments bring little solace. Neighbours and relatives describe Shubham as a bright and cheerful person who had been doing well in his software career and had big plans for the future. His friends remember him as deeply rooted, a person who always stayed connected to his hometown despite living in a metro city for work.
"This wasn’t just the killing of a tourist," said a family friend during the funeral. "It was the killing of dreams, of a young life full of promise, and of a family’s future."
As India comes to terms with the gruesome nature of the attack, the calls for a united political and national response are getting louder. The hope remains that justice will not only be served but that preventive actions will be intensified to ensure that no more innocent lives are lost to terror.
The final rites of Shubham were performed on Thursday evening in Kanpur amidst an ocean of mourners, chants of “Shaheed Shubham Amar Rahe”, and a deep silence that spoke louder than words. The pain is profound, but so is the nation’s resolve.
