On March 2, 2025, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed state officials to take swift action to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the state. During a meeting of the State Road Safety Council, CM Adityanath emphasized the need for hospitals to be built along expressways to provide immediate medical aid to accident victims, similar to the food plazas currently present.

Yogi Adityanath’s Vision for Road Safety in Uttar Pradesh

The directive comes in response to alarming statistics regarding road accidents in Uttar Pradesh, which reported 46,052 road accidents in 2024, leading to over 24,000 deaths and 34,600 injuries. CM Adityanath termed these figures as tragic and underscored the importance of multi-departmental coordination to address the issue and reduce the number of accidents.

In his statement, CM Adityanath stated that it was crucial to have hospitals on both sides of expressways to ensure timely medical assistance in case of accidents. He emphasized that trauma centres, ambulances, and trained medical staff should be stationed at divisional headquarters hospitals for quick response to emergencies.

Black Spot Identification and Road Safety Coordination

The Chief Minister also urged officials to identify and rectify black spots (accident-prone areas) across Uttar Pradesh’s road network. According to CM Adityanath, 20 districts recorded the highest fatalities in 2024, including Hardoi, Mathura, Agra, Lucknow, and Kanpur—together accounting for 42 percent of the total road deaths in the state.

To improve the situation, CM Adityanath called for district-level meetings to be held monthly and divisional meetings quarterly to assess accident causes and raise road safety awareness.

Enforcement of Strict Traffic Regulations

During the meeting, CM Adityanath also focused on enforcing strict actions against violations such as overspeeding, drunk driving, wrong-side driving, and using mobile phones while driving. He called for a crackdown on unauthorized vehicles, overloaded trucks, and illegal buses that contribute to road accidents.

Additionally, the Chief Minister instructed that Cranes, patrolling vehicles, and ambulances be stationed along expressways and highways to assist in quick accident response, with an emphasis on increasing CCTV surveillance. Currently, only four out of 93 National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) roads in the state have CCTV coverage, but the aim is to expand this number significantly.

Incorporating Road Safety in Education

In a bid to improve long-term road safety, CM Adityanath directed the Basic and Secondary Education Departments to incorporate traffic rules into school curriculums. He also emphasized the need for schools and colleges to organize road safety awareness activities regularly.

To prevent underage driving, particularly among e-rickshaw drivers, CM Adityanath highlighted the need for verification of all e-rickshaw drivers to ensure that only qualified individuals are behind the wheel.

Looking Ahead

The emphasis on road safety and the urgent action plan for infrastructure improvements aim to address the rising number of accidents in Uttar Pradesh, which has one of the highest road fatality rates in India. With hospitals on expressways, enhanced surveillance, and a focus on traffic awareness, CM Yogi Adityanath hopes to create a safer road environment for the citizens of Uttar Pradesh.
