In a significant move aimed at improving power infrastructure and consumer satisfaction in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday chaired a high-level meeting of the state’s energy department, issuing stern warnings to DISCOMs (Distribution Companies) over frequent complaints of power tripping, overbilling, and unnecessary power cuts.
The CM made it clear that power supply is no longer just a technical or administrative function, but is now a critical indicator of public trust and government accountability. Any negligence or failure to address grievances will not be tolerated, he warned.
Addressing Power Supply Complaints
The Chief Minister was informed that in June 2025, Uttar Pradesh witnessed a record peak power demand of 31,486 megawatts, during which 16,930 million units of electricity were supplied. Despite extreme humidity and temperatures, the state managed to ensure an average of 24 hours electricity in urban areas, 21.5 hours at the tehsil level, and 18 hours in rural belts.
However, Yogi expressed strong displeasure over persistent complaints of tripping across the state. He ordered technical inspections of each power feeder to identify and rectify weak points immediately. He also directed upgradation of transformer capacities where needed, to prevent overloading and service interruptions.
The CM emphasized that consumer complaints must be resolved in a time-bound and efficient manner so that the public can witness tangible improvements.
No Shortage of Funds, Fix the System: CM Yogi
Reassuring the administration, CM Yogi said that funds, infrastructure, and power are not a constraint. “There is no shortage of budget allocation for generation, transmission, and distribution. What’s needed now is discipline, efficiency, and execution on the ground,” he stated.
He reviewed the supply status from managing directors of all state DISCOMs, warning that every level of the power system must be held accountable. “Negligence, inefficiency, or delay will face strict action,” Yogi added.
Billing Irregularities and Smart Metering
Regarding billing concerns, the Chief Minister said:
“Each consumer must receive a clear, accurate bill every month. False billing or inflated charges erode public trust and weaken the department’s credibility. This must not happen under any circumstance.”
Currently, 31 lakh consumers are covered under the smart metering system, with rapid expansion underway to block and panchayat levels. The CM emphasized that smart metering should help eliminate manual errors, billing irregularities, and revenue leakages.
Reducing Technical and Commercial Losses
CM Yogi directed that technical and commercial losses (T&D losses) be reduced in a phased and scientific manner. Each DISCOM must design customized strategies to curb line losses, theft, and inefficiencies.
He encouraged digitization and modernisation of the transmission and distribution networks, particularly in high-loss regions, to reduce fault rates and improve supply quality.
Future Power Generation Targets
Reviewing the overall power generation roadmap, officials informed the CM that Uttar Pradesh’s current generation capacity stands at 11,595 MW, sourced from thermal, hydro, renewable, and central government contributions.
With large projects such as Ghatampur Thermal Plant and Meja Stage II underway, the CM was assured that the generation capacity will cross 16,000 MW in the next two years. These projects are being monitored closely for timely execution and operationalization.
CM Yogi emphasized that such capacity expansion is critical to sustaining the state's economic growth and meeting future residential and industrial demand. He urged department heads to ensure zero delays, no cost overruns, and constant on-site supervision.
UP Government’s Broader Power Strategy
This meeting is part of a larger initiative under CM Yogi’s leadership to transform the power sector in UP, making it more responsive, transparent, and resilient. In the last two years, the state has seen several reforms, including:
-
Introduction of smart meters to reduce billing errors
-
Centralized control rooms to monitor power outages in real time
-
Feeder separation for rural and agricultural consumers
-
Increased investments in renewable energy projects
Conclusion
The Chief Minister’s strong directives underline a serious push towards ensuring uninterrupted, fair, and accountable electricity service in Uttar Pradesh. With rising consumer expectations and a growing energy demand, the onus is now on electricity boards and officials to deliver with integrity and efficiency.
As CM Yogi made it clear — power supply is not merely a utility service but a measure of governance and people’s faith in the system. Moving forward, tripping, overbilling, and unnecessary outages will be treated as administrative failures, not just technical faults.
