Colonel Sofiya Qureshi’s family joined the enthusiastic crowd during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Vadodara on May 26, 2025. Hailing from Vadodara, Colonel Qureshi’s parents, brother Mohammad Sanjay Qureshi, and twin sister Shyna Sunsara were present to show their support and pride. The occasion saw a large gathering of people welcoming PM Modi as he began his two-day visit to Gujarat.

Colonel Qureshi came into the limelight for her critical role in holding regular press briefings related to Operation Sindoor, a notable initiative that highlighted women’s leadership in defense operations. Her family members expressed deep admiration for PM Modi’s efforts toward women empowerment during the roadshow.

Shyna Sunsara, speaking to the media, said, “Meeting PM Modi was a proud moment for us. PM Modi has done a lot for women’s empowerment. Sofiya is my twin sister, and her achievements inspire not just me but many others. She is no longer just my sister, but a sister to the entire country.” She also noted the significance of women taking the lead in important defense operations, citing Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh’s press briefings as a powerful message to the world that women are equal to men in capability.

Colonel Qureshi’s brother, Sanjay Qureshi, shared his emotions, stating, “Seeing PM Modi in person was a great moment for us. We thank the defense forces and the government for giving this opportunity to my sister. It is inspiring to see a woman standing up for the many women who have suffered – it is truly commendable.”

Their mother, Halima Qureshi, also expressed pride, calling Sofiya “the daughter of the entire country.” She appreciated the warm welcome PM Modi received and emphasized that Sofiya’s accomplishments should be celebrated and continued.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is a distinguished officer in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, coming from a family with a deep military heritage. Her grandfather served in the Indian Army, and her father, a religious teacher, also had military ties. Growing up with such influences, Colonel Qureshi was naturally drawn to the armed forces and was commissioned through the Officers Training Academy in 1999.

Throughout her career, she has served in various challenging assignments, including counter-insurgency zones. In 2016, she made history by becoming the first woman officer to lead an Indian Army training contingent at the ASEAN Plus multinational exercise, Force 18, standing out as the only female contingent commander among all participating nations.

Colonel Qureshi's story is a testament to women’s empowerment in traditionally male-dominated fields and reflects the Indian government’s ongoing support for women in leadership roles, particularly in defense.
