  • Congress directs leaders to align with the CWC's resolution on the Pahalgam attack.

  • The directive emphasizes unity, maturity, and responsibility in public communication.

  • Disciplinary actions will be taken against those deviating from the official party stance.

The Congress party has issued a stern warning to its leaders, urging them to adhere strictly to the party's official stance on the Pahalgam terror attack, or face "strict disciplinary action without exception." This directive comes after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) unanimously passed a resolution on April 24, 2025, condemning the attack that resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives.

In a letter to all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal emphasized the importance of unity and responsibility in the party’s response. Venugopal stated that the Congress party’s conduct during times of national crisis has always been defined by "unity, maturity, and responsibility," and reiterated that these virtues must continue to guide the party's communication.

The resolution passed by the CWC expresses the party’s deep anguish over the attack, which targeted innocent civilians, and calls for enhanced national security measures. The resolution also blamed Pakistan for being behind the attack, labeling it a "deliberate attempt to create communal unrest." The CWC resolution highlighted concerns about security lapses in Pahalgam, a high-security zone, and recommended bolstered security measures ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, a major pilgrimage that brings thousands of people to the region every year.

The Congress leadership made it clear that the resolution serves as the "sole basis for all public expressions of the party’s stance" regarding the attack. Leaders, spokespersons, media panelists, and official social media handles are expected to communicate in alignment with the CWC's message. Any deviation from the official line is considered a serious breach of party discipline and will result in disciplinary measures.

The Congress party’s actions come amid growing public outrage and calls for justice for the victims of the Pahalgam attack. In line with the party's call for accountability, Congress has stressed the importance of a unified response to the tragedy. The directive also reaffirms the party's commitment to national duty, highlighting its history of prioritizing national interests during crises.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, targeted tourists in the Baisaran meadow in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. The attack, initially claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group believed to be linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, was later retracted by the group.

In retaliation, the Indian government took several actions against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing diplomatic ties, and closing the Attari land border. Additionally, India revoked visa-free travel for Pakistani citizens and imposed digital sanctions by banning Pakistani accounts and channels across various platforms.

As the situation unfolds, Congress leaders are expected to maintain a consistent, disciplined public stance in line with the party’s resolution, ensuring that the response to this tragic event remains united and in line with national interests.
