What’s covered under the Article:

  • Active COVID-19 cases in India rise to 2,710, with Kerala reporting the highest count at 1,147.

  • Health Ministry reviews national preparedness, urges public to seek timely care and avoid self-medication.

  • Maharashtra records 84 new cases, with Mumbai and Pune witnessing the highest daily spikes in infections.

India has once again seen a rise in active COVID-19 cases, with the Union Health Ministry reporting that the tally has reached 2,710 across the country. While the numbers remain relatively low compared to past waves, the recent increase has prompted both the central and state governments to issue advisories emphasizing caution, timely diagnosis, and responsible public behavior.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare noted that 1,170 patients have already been discharged, indicating that recovery remains strong. However, it also highlighted that certain states are seeing localized surges, particularly Kerala, which has emerged as the state with the highest active case count at 1,147.

Nationwide Preparedness and Government Response

Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, addressed the media on Friday, assuring citizens that the Centre is fully prepared to deal with any developments related to the current COVID-19 situation.

“Both our Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are closely monitoring the situation in all states. We’ve reviewed the infrastructure built during earlier waves and are ready to respond swiftly if required,” said Jadhav.

According to the Minister, the government has reassessed the existing healthcare infrastructure – including oxygen production units, ICU bed availability, and COVID-19 testing labs – and is working closely with state officials and health departments to ensure readiness for any eventuality.

The Ministry also stressed that public participation remains crucial in containing the spread. People were advised to seek immediate medical help if symptoms worsen, particularly if oxygen saturation levels fall to 93% or below, or if there is difficulty in breathing.

State-wise Breakdown: Focus on Kerala and Maharashtra

Among all Indian states, Kerala continues to lead the active case chart, contributing nearly 42% of the total national tally. While the Union Health Ministry did not report alarming symptoms in the majority of cases, officials are conducting a reconciliation of mortality figures, and daily data from Bihar is still awaited.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, which was one of the hardest-hit states during the previous COVID-19 waves, has reported a total of 681 cases since January 2025. On Friday alone, 84 new cases were recorded, bringing the active case count in the state to 467.

The Public Health Department of Maharashtra assured the public that most of the newly infected individuals are showing mild symptoms, and there is no need for alarm. Extensive testing, tracing, and monitoring protocols are in place, with a total of 10,324 tests conducted this year and 681 returning positive.

District-Wise Distribution of New COVID-19 Cases in Maharashtra (Reported Friday):

  • Mumbai: 32 cases

  • Pune Municipal Corporation: 19

  • Thane Municipal Corporation: 14

  • Thane District (excluding TMC limits): 2

  • Navi Mumbai: 1

  • Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation: 1

  • Raigad: 2

  • Panvel: 1

  • Nashik: 1

  • Pune District (outside PMC limits): 1

  • Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation: 3

  • Satara: 2

  • Kolhapur District: 1

  • Kolhapur Municipal Corporation: 1

  • Sangli Municipal Corporation: 3

The concentration of cases in Mumbai and Pune has prompted local health authorities to reassess public safety advisories, particularly concerning mass gatherings and public events.

Health Advisory and Public Guidelines

In light of the current spike, the Health Ministry has reiterated its advisory against the self-prescription of antibiotics, unless there's a confirmed bacterial infection. The misuse of antibiotics has been a significant concern during the pandemic, with potential long-term implications on antimicrobial resistance.

Citizens are also being advised to:

  • Monitor oxygen levels regularly if experiencing respiratory symptoms.

  • Avoid crowded places and maintain appropriate distancing.

  • Wear masks, especially in high-risk areas or if experiencing any flu-like symptoms.

  • Avoid using antibiotics or steroids without medical consultation.

  • Isolate and seek medical advice immediately in case of worsening symptoms.

The government has also urged state health departments to be on alert, ramp up genomic sequencing for virus variant monitoring, and reinforce vaccination drives for vulnerable populations.

Public Health Infrastructure and Community Response

Healthcare professionals across India have emphasized that the current infrastructure – bolstered significantly during the first three COVID-19 waves – is adequate to handle the current surge. Oxygen generation plants, ventilator support, and rapid response teams remain functional and are being regularly audited.

Additionally, the AYUSH Ministry is actively engaged in promoting preventive health measures rooted in Ayurveda, Yoga, and holistic wellness practices. While not a substitute for modern medical treatment, these practices are seen as complementary for improving immunity and well-being.

Conclusion: No Cause for Panic, But Caution is Essential

While the numbers of active COVID-19 cases are rising steadily, experts and authorities are unanimous in their reassurance that there is no cause for panic. The cases currently being reported are mild in nature, hospital infrastructure is intact, and treatment protocols are well-established.

However, the situation underscores the need for continued vigilance, responsible public behavior, and strict adherence to guidelines issued by health authorities.

The Union Health Ministry, along with state health departments, is monitoring the scenario in real-time. The central message remains clear – do not ignore symptoms, get tested, seek early medical intervention, and avoid unnecessary medication.

India, having faced multiple waves of the pandemic with resilience, now stands better prepared – both in terms of medical readiness and community awareness – to handle any future challenges posed by COVID-19. But the virus is still present, and complacency could reverse the gains made in the past few years. Therefore, the nation’s focus must remain on prevention, early detection, and timely treatment.
