  • India reported four new COVID-19 deaths and 203 fresh cases, raising the active case count to 3,961 as of June 2, 2025.

  • Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra and West Bengal recorded spikes in cases; Kerala leads with 1,435 active cases.

  • Health Ministry says COVID infrastructure like ICU beds and oxygen plants has been reviewed and is ready if needed.

India’s battle with COVID-19 continues into 2025, with active cases nearing the 4,000 mark and four new deaths reported in the last 24 hours. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the active COVID-19 caseload stood at 3,961 as of 8 AM on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Since Sunday (June 1), 203 fresh infections have been added to the national count, reflecting a steady yet manageable rise in cases across several states.

COVID-19 Death Toll in 2025

With four additional deaths reported since Sunday, the cumulative COVID-19 death toll in 2025 has now risen to 32. The fatalities were reported from Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala — each state recording one death in the past 24 hours.

Though the daily numbers remain significantly lower compared to the peak of previous waves, health officials and ministries are closely monitoring the trend to prevent any resurgence.

State-wise Breakdown

Delhi reported 47 new cases, bringing its active case count to 483. The capital city has remained one of the more closely watched zones due to its population density and movement.

Kerala registered 35 new cases, pushing its active caseload to 1,435, the highest among the states currently. Kerala has historically reported higher case numbers owing to widespread testing and meticulous reporting.

Maharashtra added 21 new cases, increasing its total to 506 active cases. The state, which was once the epicentre during earlier waves, continues to remain vigilant.

West Bengal reported 44 fresh cases, with the total active caseload now at 331. No new deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.

Central Government’s Preparedness

In response to the rising numbers, Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge) Prataprao Jadhav assured the public that the Central government is fully prepared to handle any situation that might arise from the ongoing COVID-19 cases.

He stated that both the Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are monitoring the situation in coordination with State governments, including discussions with Health Secretaries and AYUSH Secretaries across India.

“We have spoken with all concerned departments, and we are alert across the board. Our teams are keeping a close eye on the case trends in every state,” said Jadhav.

Review of COVID Infrastructure

According to the Union Minister, a comprehensive review of the health infrastructure developed during the earlier COVID-19 waves has already been conducted. This includes:

  • Functionality of oxygen generation plants

  • Availability of ICU beds

  • Storage of essential medical supplies

  • Deployment of trained health personnel

Jadhav emphasised that the health systems are adequately equipped and primed for any sudden spikes. Preparations have already begun to scale up resources if the situation escalates.

Public Advisory

Despite the recent rise in numbers, experts and government officials alike have reiterated that there is no need for public panic, thanks to the high levels of natural and vaccine-acquired immunity in the population.

As stated earlier by prominent health expert Dr Soumya Swaminathan, India’s current immunity levels are sufficient to prevent severe outbreaks. However, the public is still advised to:

  • Maintain basic hygiene protocols

  • Avoid crowded or poorly ventilated spaces if unwell

  • Use masks in sensitive zones or healthcare facilities

  • Report symptoms and get tested where necessary

Conclusion

With the total number of active COVID-19 cases in India reaching 3,961 and four new deaths recorded over the last day, state and central health authorities are maintaining a state of readiness. While the current numbers are manageable, the government’s approach remains proactive and precautionary.

As new variants continue to emerge globally, India's healthcare system is being consistently upgraded to handle any potential surges. The focus remains on early detection, adequate infrastructure, and maintaining public confidence through clear communication and robust preparedness
