The Karnataka government has denied permission for a proposed cricket match at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, citing law and order and security considerations, City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh announced on Monday.

Addressing the media, the Commissioner said the decision was taken after a detailed assessment of the prevailing situation in the city and consultations with senior officials. He clarified that the refusal was not event-specific but based on broader public safety concerns, given the scale of security arrangements currently required across Bengaluru.

The announcement has come as a setback for cricket organisers and fans, as the stadium is one of India’s premier cricketing venues and frequently hosts high-profile domestic and international matches.

Authorities Cite Security and Law-and-Order Concerns

According to police officials, the denial was primarily driven by heightened security requirements and the need to deploy personnel for other critical duties across the city. Bengaluru is currently witnessing increased policing due to multiple public events, demonstrations, and year-end activities, stretching available resources.

Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh explained that ensuring the safety of spectators, players, and officials during a large sporting event would require significant police deployment, which may not be feasible under the current circumstances.

He emphasised that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and orderly administration, adding that the police force must prioritise essential law-and-order responsibilities over discretionary events.

The denial of permission has disrupted the plans of event organisers, who had already begun logistical preparations for the match.
