Cyclone Fengal has caused significant damage in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, leading to widespread devastation, loss of lives, and property destruction. The heavy rains, floods, and landslides caused by the storm have left thousands of people displaced and in need of urgent assistance. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin of all necessary support to manage the crisis. However, tensions between the state and central governments have risen following the Central Government's refusal to allow MPs to discuss the cyclone's impact in Parliament.

Prime Minister’s Assurance Amid Protests

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi spoke with CM Stalin, offering assistance in the aftermath of the cyclone. Despite the government's promise of support, CM Stalin has criticized the lack of response from the central authorities. Stalin emphasized that MPs were not allowed to raise the issue of Cyclone Fengal in Parliament, stating that, “As part of our responsibility, we are assessing the damages and will send a report. That is our duty and responsibility. It is also their responsibility to respond, but they are refusing to do so.” He also reiterated that the state government was doing its best to handle the crisis, despite the central government's inaction.

Opposition Calls for Urgent Relief Fund

In the winter session of Parliament, Congress MP B Manickam Tagore raised an adjournment motion urging the government to allocate an Emergency Relief Fund for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Tagore drew attention to the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone Fengal, which has already claimed 12 lives in Puducherry and caused heavy damages across Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the state government has requested ₹22,000 crore for restoration efforts in Tamil Nadu and ₹2,500 crore for Puducherry.

Tagore underscored the urgency of the situation, saying, "Cyclone Fengal has tragically claimed 12 lives in Puducherry and caused widespread destruction across Tamil Nadu." His call for immediate financial support has gained traction as the scale of devastation continues to grow.

Schools and Colleges Closed in Tamil Nadu

As part of the response to the ongoing heavy rainfall from Cyclone Fengal, several districts in Tamil Nadu have announced school closures. On December 3, 2024, schools and colleges in Nilgiris, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry districts remained closed due to the flooding and heavy rainfall. In some areas like Kallakurichi, Thirukovilur Town, and Krishnagiri, schools were also shut as a precautionary measure against the continuing storm.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for further heavy rains in the coming days, and local authorities are taking necessary precautions to safeguard citizens.

Rahul Gandhi’s Condolences and Call for Relief

In response to the devastation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his heartfelt condolences to those affected by the cyclone. He shared his thoughts for those who have lost loved ones and for those whose homes and properties have been damaged. Rahul Gandhi also urged Congress workers in Tamil Nadu to step forward and assist in the relief efforts, encouraging them to support the state administration in the ongoing recovery work.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi wrote: “Devastating news of Cyclone Fengal in Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones during this tragedy. My thoughts are also with those whose homes and property have been damaged. I urge all Congress workers in the state to step forward and help the administration in relief efforts wherever possible.”

Conclusion

As Cyclone Fengal continues to impact Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the calls for urgent relief and restoration efforts grow louder. Despite the Central Government's assurances, political tensions have surfaced due to the opposition's demand for immediate financial support and the inability to discuss the crisis in Parliament. With more heavy rains expected, the situation remains critical, and further relief operations are likely to be necessary in the coming days. The state government continues to push for the necessary resources to handle the aftermath of this devastating storm.
