Cyclone Remal has unleashed a wave of destruction across Assam, with heavy rains and strong winds causing widespread damage and disruption. The storm has resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and left 29 others injured in various incidents across the state. As the cyclone continues to impact the region, local authorities and residents are grappling with the aftermath and working to mitigate further damage.

In the Sonitpur district, the cyclone's ferocity was felt acutely when a tree fell on a school bus in the Dhekiajuli area, injuring 12 students. The incident occurred following heavy rains and strong winds. Locals heroically rushed to the scene to rescue the students and ensured they were sent to a local hospital for immediate treatment.

Earlier reports confirmed two fatalities due to the storm. Putul Gogoi lost his life in a landslide triggered by relentless rains at the under-construction NHPC's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project in Lakhimpur district. In another tragic incident, a 17-year-old college student named Kausik Bordoloi Amphi was killed when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw he was traveling in at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. Four other passengers in the vehicle sustained injuries. Additionally, a person in the Palashbari area of Kamrup district was injured while attempting to escape a falling tree.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized the gravity of the situation and urged citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. He has directed officials to remain vigilant and respond promptly to any emergencies. "The inclement weather is expected to continue. I have instructed officials to be alert to respond to exigencies at the earliest. Request citizens not to venture out unless there is an emergency and be safe. We are constantly monitoring the situation," Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Dima Hasao district has been particularly hard hit, with road communication between Haflong and Cachar severely affected. The Jatinga-Harangajao stretch has been restricted to traffic, and heavy vehicles en route to Barak Valley are being redirected through Meghalaya. Landslides have occurred in Kapircherrra (NH-27, Haflong to Silchar) and ThereBasati (Umrangso-Dehangi Road), disrupting and restricting traffic. A BSNL tower in Haflong has been badly damaged, and evacuation efforts are ongoing.

Several districts, including Kamrup (Metro), Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, and Dima Hasao, have reported significant impacts from the storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall across Assam as the cyclone progresses.

In response to the severe weather, ferry services in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar, and Karimganj districts have been suspended. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has issued advisories urging people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures, steer clear of water-logged areas, stock up on essential items, and contact authorities in case of emergencies.

The state government and various agencies are on high alert, continuously monitoring the evolving situation. Efforts are being made to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities, with a focus on quick and effective disaster response.

Cyclone Remal's impact on Assam underscores the urgent need for disaster preparedness and effective response strategies. As the state deals with the immediate aftermath, there is a concerted effort to restore normalcy and provide assistance to those affected by this natural calamity. The resilience and solidarity of the local communities, combined with the swift actions of authorities, play a crucial role in navigating through this challenging period.
