The political landscape of Odisha witnessed a significant development as senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray formally resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and also gave up his membership in the Upper House of Parliament before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move comes at a time when Odisha politics is already going through a phase of transition and internal reshaping within regional and national parties.

Samantaray, who has been a long-time associate of BJD supremo and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, submitted his resignation citing dissatisfaction with the internal functioning of the party. He alleged that he had been “systematically belittled” within the organisation and was not being given adequate space or respect despite his long association and contributions.

According to his statement, one of the major reasons behind his exit was the inability to meet the party leadership directly. He also pointed towards alleged internal control and influence within the party structure, naming concerns around former bureaucrat-turned-politician VK Pandian, who has been a controversial figure in Odisha political discussions in recent years. Samantaray suggested that such internal dynamics contributed to weakening his position within the party.

On Monday, Samantaray officially resigned from both the BJD and his Rajya Sabha seat. He later met CP Radhakrishnan, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, to formally submit his resignation from the Upper House. By Tuesday, he had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of senior party leaders, marking a complete political shift from regional to national alignment.

This development is not isolated. In recent months, BJD has witnessed a gradual exit of several senior leaders, particularly those holding parliamentary positions. Earlier, two Rajya Sabha MPs, Sujeet Kumar and Mamata Mahanta, had also resigned from the party and later joined BJP. This pattern indicates a deeper political realignment in Odisha, where opposition parties are increasingly attracting leaders from the ruling or dominant regional party.

Samantaray’s political journey has been long and closely associated with BJD. He was elected twice as an MLA in 2009 and 2014, and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha in April 2024. He has represented issues concerning Odisha at the national level and has been active in parliamentary discussions. In his resignation letter addressed to Naveen Patnaik, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the Upper House and represent the people of Odisha.

In his letter, he wrote that he felt indebted for being given the opportunity to serve the undivided Cuttack district and to raise important issues concerning the state at the national level. However, he also clearly stated that he felt increasingly sidelined within the organisation, which ultimately led to his decision to step away.

The timing of his resignation is politically significant. Odisha politics has been undergoing shifts following the 2024 Lok Sabha and state elections, where BJD faced electoral setbacks. Internal debates within the party regarding leadership style, organisational control, and strategic direction have become more visible. Samantaray also made strong remarks regarding his inability to meet the party president despite being a senior member.
