  • Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva's security was upgraded to Z category after threat calls.

  • Z category security includes 20 to 22 personnel, including commandos and police.

  • The security upgrade follows a threat assessment by Delhi Police, though specific reasons remain undisclosed.

In a significant move, the security cover of Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP president, has been upgraded from Y category to Z category. This change comes after the BJP leader received threatening calls, prompting a thorough evaluation of the security threat he faces. The decision was made on April 26, 2025, following an assessment by Delhi Police. While the specific reasons behind the upgrade have not been disclosed, authorities have stated that the decision was made after a comprehensive threat evaluation.

Details of Z Category Security

Under Z category security, Virendra Sachdeva will now be provided a much higher level of protection. The Z cover will deploy a security team of 20 to 22 personnel, which includes four to six commandos as well as regular police officers. Additionally, a pilot vehicle will accompany his convoy, enhancing the leader's safety during public engagements and travel.

This upgraded security measure signifies a shift in the Delhi BJP President’s protection, as Z category security is designed for individuals who face significant and immediate threats. This level of security is typically assigned after an in-depth threat analysis by agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), which forwards its findings to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Based on these reports, MHA recommends the necessary security measures to ensure the safety of high-risk individuals.

Understanding Security Categories in India

In India, security covers are granted based on threat perception, which is assessed regularly by intelligence agencies and reviewed by the MHA. There are several categories of security, ranging from minimal protection to high-level security:

  • X Category: This category offers the lowest level of security, typically consisting of two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) who are responsible for the individual’s protection.

  • Y Category: The individual is provided with armed guards at their residence, along with additional security personnel. This is usually assigned to those facing moderate threats.

  • Z Category: This category comes with a team of 20-22 personnel, including both commandos and police officers, and is often assigned to high-profile individuals. A bulletproof vest is also part of the protection for individuals under this category.

  • Z+ Category: This is one of the highest levels of security, featuring a mobile security team from the National Security Guard (NSG). The individual also receives a bulletproof car and additional measures depending on the level of threat and location.

The Role of the Special Protection Group (SPG)

While various security categories cover VIPs and public figures, the Prime Minister of India and their immediate family members are provided the highest level of security under the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act, 1988. This protection extends to former Prime Ministers for five years post-tenure.

According to data from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) provides security to the highest number of VIPs in India, with 9 individuals receiving Z+ protection and 11 under Z category.

Conclusion

The upgrade of Virendra Sachdeva’s security to Z category underscores the increasing concerns around the safety of prominent political figures in India, especially after specific threats have been identified. As per the authorities, the decision to elevate his security is based on a comprehensive threat assessment. The move aligns with the larger security measures aimed at safeguarding political leaders, especially in an environment where threats and risks to public figures are ever-present.
