Delhi’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is wasting no time in addressing the key issues affecting the city. In her first move since taking office, CM Rekha Gupta called a meeting with officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and Jal Board to discuss the ongoing issue of potholes in the city. She emphasized the importance of timely action to improve the road infrastructure and provide better urban living conditions for residents.
Rekha Gupta’s First Cabinet Meeting and Key Decisions
In her first cabinet meeting, Rekha Gupta also announced the approval of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which was previously blocked by the AAP government. The scheme, aimed at providing healthcare benefits to low-income families, will soon be implemented across Delhi, bringing much-needed relief to citizens. Gupta expressed her satisfaction that this critical healthcare initiative would finally be available to the people of Delhi.
She also shared her plans for further meetings and governance priorities, including addressing potholes and ensuring a cleaner, safer city for residents. “Today, we will discuss the potholes issue with officials to ensure we take immediate steps for better roads,” she added.
Rekha Gupta’s Political Journey
Rekha Gupta’s ascent to the Delhi CM post marks a significant milestone for the BJP in the capital. At 50 years old, she became the second woman Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj, and the fourth woman CM in Delhi’s political history.
Before her rise to the top, Rekha Gupta was a prominent figure in Delhi BJP, serving as the general secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of its national executive committee. Her leadership focused on campaigns for marginalized communities and women's welfare.
Gupta’s political journey began with her active participation in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She became the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1996-97, where she advocated for student rights and issues. Later, as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007, she worked on improving local infrastructure, such as building libraries and parks.
Despite a setback in the 2023 mayoral election, where she lost to AAP's Shelly Oberoi, Gupta’s political influence remained strong. Her appointment as CM came as a surprise to many, as the BJP selected her over more senior leaders, possibly due to her leadership as a woman representative.
A Humble Leader with a Promising Future
Gupta’s low-profile style is in contrast to some of her more high-profile counterparts in the Delhi BJP. Her name as the CM candidate was a subject of intense speculation before it was announced, yet Gupta has emerged as a quiet yet determined force in Delhi’s political landscape.
In her inaugural speech, Gupta expressed gratitude towards her supporters, who gathered outside her Shalimar Bagh residence to congratulate her on becoming Delhi’s Chief Minister. She received garlands and flower bouquets, reflecting the support of Delhi’s residents as she took charge.
With Delhi facing multiple challenges, including infrastructure, public services, and corruption-free governance, Rekha Gupta’s leadership is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of the capital city. Her proactive approach, starting with potholes and healthcare initiatives, signals a strong governance agenda that aims to tackle long-standing issues and build a better Delhi for its residents.
Her rise to power, despite challenges, is also seen as a significant step towards empowering women in politics, with Gupta now holding one of the most powerful political positions in Delhi.
As Delhi embarks on a new chapter, CM Rekha Gupta’s priorities and political strategies will be keenly observed, with many looking to her leadership for lasting change and development.
