  • Cabinet ministers and their respective responsibilities in the new BJP-led Delhi government.
  • How Rekha Gupta’s leadership marks a departure from Kejriwal’s governance style.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has set the stage for an active and high-stakes leadership as she assumes responsibility for 10 key portfolios in her cabinet. These include the General Administration, Services, Finance, Revenue, Women and Child Development, Land and Building, Information and Public Relations, Vigilance, Administrative Reforms, Planning, and any other departments yet to be allocated.

A Heavy Responsibility for the New Delhi CM

With these multiple portfolios, Rekha Gupta is poised to be the busiest CM in recent history. The most significant of these responsibilities is her charge of the Finance and Revenue departments, which carry immense weight in the administration of the capital. Handling such diverse portfolios means Gupta will be closely involved in key decisions and day-to-day governance, setting her apart from her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal, who was not directly involved in as many domains.

In her first cabinet meeting, Gupta emphasized the need for immediate action on Ayushman Bharat, with a top-up of Rs 5 lakh, and also announced the tabling of 14 CAG reports during the first seating of the Assembly. She made it clear that her cabinet’s agenda would be focused on good governance and public welfare right from the start.

Cabinet Portfolios for Other Ministers

Alongside CM Rekha Gupta, the new cabinet consists of six other ministers, each entrusted with a mix of vital portfolios:

  • Pravesh Verma will oversee Public Works Department (PWD), Legislative Affairs, Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), Water, and Gurdwara elections.
  • Ashish Sood will handle Home, Power, Urban Development, Education, Higher Education, Training and Technical Education.
  • Manjinder Singh Sirsa will be in charge of Food and Supplies, Forest and Environment, and Industries departments.
  • Ravinder Singh (Indraj) will manage Social Welfare, SC and ST Welfare, Cooperative, and Elections departments.
  • Kapil Mishra will be responsible for Law and Justice, Labour, Employment, Art and Culture, Language, and Tourism.
  • Pankaj Kumar Singh will look after Health and Family Welfare, Transport, and Information Technology.

New Priorities for Delhi’s Governance

Beyond her administrative duties, CM Rekha Gupta has also made her priorities clear. After her oath-taking ceremony, she and her cabinet ministers participated in the evening Aarti on the banks of the Yamuna. During this moment, Gupta emphasized that making the Yamuna River clean would be a top priority of her government, signaling her focus on environmental issues alongside the city’s infrastructure needs.

Gupta’s hands-on approach to governance and her wide-reaching responsibilities are likely to shape Delhi’s political landscape in the coming years. Her multifaceted role will allow her to directly influence several key sectors, ranging from finance to women's welfare, making her the central figure in the city's administration.

Her involvement in both policy and governance will mark a sharp contrast to Kejriwal’s tenure, where certain departments were handled by other senior ministers. As Gupta is entrusted with handling multiple portfolios, she is expected to become more directly engaged with public administration and decision-making, creating a more centralized governance model.

The Future of Delhi Under Rekha Gupta

As Gupta begins her term with a clear and ambitious agenda, Delhi residents can expect quick implementation of policies, especially those related to healthcare, infrastructure, and public services. Her wide-ranging roles will likely keep her occupied, as her leadership drives both administrative reforms and the city’s overall development. With key initiatives already on her radar, including the Ayushman Bharat scheme and environmental reforms, her busy tenure as CM marks the beginning of a new era for Delhi’s governance.
