The flood situation in northeast Delhi took a tragic turn as the body of a missing man was recovered after two days of intensive search operations. Identified as Ombir, a resident of Garhi Mendhu village, the man had gone missing on September 3, 2025, during severe flooding in the area.

According to Delhi Police, information was first received about a possible drowning on September 3. Ombir was reportedly last seen around 8:30 am, walking from Pusta Road towards the village. While no eyewitnesses confirmed that he drowned, concerns were immediately raised about his disappearance amidst the floodwaters.

In response, police teams, assisted by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local residents, launched search operations. Despite repeated efforts, Ombir could not be located on the first two days of the rescue mission.

On September 5 at around 11 am, the combined search team once again combed the area near Garhi Mendhu village. This time, they successfully recovered Ombir’s body. The remains were subsequently shifted to GTB Hospital for postmortem. Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident has once again highlighted the grim toll of floods in Delhi, where low-lying areas such as Garhi Mendhu remain highly vulnerable during periods of heavy rainfall. Floodwaters not only disrupt daily life but also pose serious safety risks to residents, especially those living near embankments and waterlogged roads.

The search and recovery operation demonstrates the coordinated efforts of the police, NDRF, and disaster management teams in handling such emergencies. However, Ombir’s death serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of navigating flood-hit zones.

Local residents expressed shock and grief over the loss, stating that Ombir was a well-known figure in the community. Many also voiced concerns about inadequate flood preparedness, urging the authorities to strengthen disaster management infrastructure in northeast Delhi.

As the monsoon season continues, experts warn that urban flooding in Delhi may worsen unless structural reforms are introduced. Issues such as waterlogging, poor drainage systems, and encroachments further compound the risks. The recovery of Ombir’s body underlines the urgent need for better early-warning systems, evacuation measures, and relief operations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

With the postmortem underway, the final medical report is expected to provide clarity on whether Ombir’s death was caused directly by drowning or other complications linked to the floods. Meanwhile, his family and fellow villagers mourn the loss as Delhi grapples with the human cost of recurring flood disasters.
