The Delhi government has announced a major policy shift introducing mandatory two days of work from home every week for government employees as part of a broader effort to reduce fuel consumption and manage traffic congestion in the national capital. In addition to government employees, the administration has indicated that an advisory will soon be issued for the private sector, encouraging companies to adopt similar work-from-home arrangements wherever feasible.

Office timings across departments have also been revised and staggered to reduce peak-hour congestion. Government offices will now operate from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm, while Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices will function from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The Delhi government has also appealed to residents to participate in a voluntary “No Vehicle Day” once a week, encouraging citizens to reduce personal vehicle usage and adopt alternative transport methods.

In addition, the administration has announced that it will not purchase any new government vehicles for the next six months as part of its cost-cutting and sustainability initiative.

To support employees affected by the transition, transport allowance has been increased by 10 per cent, aiming to offset commuting costs and encourage use of public transport systems.

Beyond government operations, traders and businesses have been urged to shift cargo movement from road-based trucking to rail transport wherever possible. This step is intended to reduce fuel consumption and ease road congestion caused by heavy commercial traffic in the city.
