In a move set to boost water tourism in Delhi, the government has announced plans to launch boat rides along a 4-kilometer stretch of the Yamuna between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. This development comes after the Delhi government and the Centre signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 11, 2025, marking the beginning of this new venture.

Vision for Integrated Transport System

During the event at Asita Park, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena emphasized that the boat ride initiative is part of a larger plan to integrate the river transport system with road and metro networks. Saxena stated that the Yamuna corridor would be developed with a public-private partnership (PPP) model, aimed at making the service more efficient and widespread in the future. He added that this initiative would help decongest Delhi's roads, offering residents an alternative travel option.

“This is just the beginning. In the upcoming days, the service will be expanded, significant improvements will be made in the condition of the Yamuna, and Delhi's waterways will be further developed,” said Saxena.

Focus on Environmental Conservation

Saxena referred to this development as a “historic day” for Delhi, underscoring the government's dedication to environmental conservation and promoting sustainable transport solutions. He also acknowledged the past delays in cleaning the Yamuna, noting that it had been treated like a drain in previous years. However, with the current government's efforts, he assured that progress had accelerated, including initiatives related to solar energy and sustainable transport.

CM Rekha Gupta's Vision for Yamuna's Transformation

Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta spoke at the event, describing the initiative as a step toward giving Delhi a modern identity, focusing on cleanliness, beautification, and development. She highlighted the government's effort to introduce eco-friendly electric-solar hybrid boats, aiming to promote sustainable travel. Gupta also envisions transforming the Yamuna ghats into cultural and artistic hubs similar to the famous ghats in Varanasi, enhancing the city's tourism potential.

Gupta praised the work of all involved departments, noting their commitment to daily cleaning efforts to ensure the continued transformation of the Yamuna area. She also expressed gratitude for the support under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, calling the development “impossible” but now made possible.

Looking Ahead

The government plans to expand the boat ride initiative over time, with the focus on eco-friendly transportation, traffic decongestion, and supporting local businesses. As part of the broader goal, electric-solar hybrid boats will be introduced, and further improvements to public transport are expected.

The Yamuna will not only serve as a mode of travel but will also be an avenue for cultural and tourism activities, creating a modern and sustainable transport system for Delhi's residents.
