Key Points:

  1. Union Health Minister JP Nadda reviews central hospitals' heatwave preparedness.
  2. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital reports five deaths and 12 critical cases due to heatstroke.
  3. Special heatwave units to be established in central government hospitals.

As Delhi grapples with a severe heatwave, the Union Health Minister JP Nadda has taken proactive steps to ensure that central government hospitals are fully prepared to handle the surge in heat-related illnesses. On June 19, Minister Nadda reviewed the current heatwave situation and emphasized the importance of hospitals being equipped to provide optimal healthcare to those affected by the extreme temperatures. The minister has directed the establishment of special heatwave units in central government hospitals to cater to the increasing number of heatstroke patients. This directive comes in response to alarming reports from the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, where five deaths due to suspected heatstroke have been recorded. Additionally, at least 12 patients, primarily daily wage laborers, are in critical condition and on ventilator support.

According to Dr. Ajay Shukla, Medical Superintendent of RML Hospital, Tuesday saw an unprecedented number of heatstroke admissions, with 11 patients being admitted in a single day – the highest this season. Since the heatwave began approximately a month ago, the hospital has admitted around 45 people with heat-related ailments. Dr. Shukla stated, "A total of 22 patients have been admitted to the hospital, and five have lost their lives due to suspected heatstroke. The majority of patients are laborers who work in extreme conditions." Dr. Shukla highlighted that delays in reaching the hospital were a significant factor contributing to the deaths. "So far, we have received a total of 45-50 patients, and around 7 people have died since the beginning of the heatwave situation," he said. He also mentioned that the mortality rate for heatstroke can be alarmingly high if treatment is delayed, estimating it to be between 60-70 percent.

Dr. Amlendu Yadav, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine at RML Hospital, elaborated on the vulnerability of certain groups to heatstroke. "Most of the patients are poor migrant laborers who engage in extensive physical work, making them highly susceptible to heatstroke. Another group includes neglected elderly individuals, often residing on top floors without proper hydration." The critical state of these patients underscores the necessity for timely medical intervention. Dr. Yadav emphasized, "Delays in administering treatment lead to severe cases landing in Intensive Care Units."

In response to these challenges, Union Health Minister JP Nadda's directive for special heatwave units aims to enhance the capacity of hospitals to manage heatstroke cases efficiently. These units are expected to provide specialized care and swift treatment to mitigate the high mortality associated with heat-related ailments. The Indian Meteorological Department has reported that the maximum temperature in Delhi feels like 51 degrees Celsius, exacerbating the risk of heatstroke. With the heatwave showing no signs of abating, the focus is now on improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring rapid response to heat-related emergencies.

In summary, the heatwave gripping Delhi has resulted in multiple fatalities and a significant number of critical cases. The Union Health Ministry's efforts to bolster hospital preparedness and establish dedicated heatwave units are crucial steps towards safeguarding the health and well-being of the city's residents during this extreme weather event. By ensuring that all central government hospitals are equipped with special heatwave units and capable of providing immediate and effective treatment, the authorities aim to reduce the mortality rate associated with heatstroke. This proactive approach is vital, especially for vulnerable populations such as laborers and the elderly, who are most affected by the soaring temperatures.
