Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, has raised alarms over the dire living conditions in parts of the city, describing the situation as ‘hellish’ after a review of basic services and amenities. His remarks were based on his visit to areas lacking essential infrastructure like proper drainage, electricity, water supply, and basic cleanliness. Saxena highlighted the helplessness of residents who were grappling with poor sanitation, water shortages, and erratic electricity supply, which severely impacted their daily lives.
In a detailed social media post, Saxena shared the miserable conditions faced by residents, noting the lack of drainage systems that led to narrow lanes filled with silt and dirty water. He also pointed out that the absence of proper roads was contributing to further inconvenience. Many of the affected residents, especially women, were forced to carry water in buckets from the tanker that only arrived once every 7-8 days. Complaints about power cuts lasting 8 to 10 hours a day were also highlighted, with people burdened with high electricity bills despite unreliable service.
Saxena's call to action included a cleanliness drive, which was set to begin immediately to address the waste and sanitation concerns in these areas. He also urged the AAP-led Delhi government to visit the affected zones and assess the conditions directly, promising to take swift action.
The remarks triggered a political war of words between the BJP and AAP, with accusations that the ruling party had failed to tackle persistent sanitation issues in the city. In response, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed gratitude towards the Lieutenant Governor for bringing attention to these critical issues. He assured the public that the Delhi government would act on the concerns raised, including fixing the Nangloi-Mundka road with potholes pointed out by the LG. Kejriwal also committed to cleaning up the areas the LG had visited and urged him to continue highlighting such problems for immediate resolution.
