- Delhi-Meerut RRTS to start operations from Delhi by January 2025, currently in trial phase.

The long-awaited Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) connecting Delhi and Meerut is poised to begin its operations from January 2025, offering commuters a state-of-the-art, seamless travel experience. The first phase of the RRTS corridor, which spans 82 kilometers, is currently undergoing extensive trials, with a 42-kilometer section already operational in Uttar Pradesh. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is leading the initiative, with a focus on ensuring smooth and efficient service for passengers once the system is fully functional.
The Namo Bharat trains, which will operate on the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, are equipped with advanced facilities aimed at enhancing passenger safety and comfort. These trains boast CCTV monitoring, emergency communication systems, onboard Wi-Fi, and a fire detection system, among other features. This makes them one of the most technologically advanced rapid transit solutions in the region, offering a futuristic and safe travel experience for commuters.
RRTS Trial Runs and Certification
Currently, NCRTC is in the final stages of conducting trial runs on the Delhi-Meerut RRTS route. These trials began in the first week of October, with Namo Bharat trains running between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar stations. NCRTC has also announced plans to extend these trials gradually to Sarai Kale Khan, further integrating the RRTS stations into the overall transportation network. The first phase of trials is nearing completion, and NCRTC is preparing to apply for certification from the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), a critical step for the operationalisation of the system.
Integration with Other Transport Systems
One of the most anticipated features of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS is its seamless integration with other modes of transport. The Anand Vihar station, a key stop along the route, has been designed to connect easily with multiple transit options. This station, strategically located just one level below ground, will connect directly with two metro lines, a railway station, and two inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs) in Delhi and Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. As a result, Anand Vihar will become one of the busiest and most significant transit hubs in the region.
The Namo Bharat trains have already made an impact, having served over 40 lakh passengers in just their first year of operation. The Ghaziabad RRTS station has seen the highest footfall, followed closely by the Sahibabad and Modinagar North stations. These figures reflect the growing popularity of the RRTS system, which is transforming the way people commute across Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, and surrounding areas.
Union Minister's Visit and Future Expansion
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, recently took a ride on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor to mark the one-year anniversary of the Namo Bharat trains. During his visit, he was briefed on the unique design of the Anand Vihar RRTS station, which is set to become a central hub for the region. The station's design ensures easy access and smooth integration with other modes of transport, making it a vital part of the wider RRTS network.
Minister Lal also highlighted the upcoming expansion of the RRTS network, with new connections planned between Delhi-Panipat and Delhi-Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behror-Alwar. This expansion is expected to further improve connectivity in the National Capital Region and ease traffic congestion in the long term.
The successful launch and operationalisation of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor will set the stage for future phases of rapid transit systems across India, positioning the NCR region as a hub for advanced urban transport solutions.
