Delhi records wettest August in 15 years with 399.8 mm rainfall, worsening flood threats as IMD predicts more moderate rain ahead.
The Yamuna River in Delhi crossed the danger mark on Tuesday morning, sparking major concerns of flooding across the national capital. According to officials, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge touched 205.80 metres, crossing the official danger threshold of 205.33 metres. The rising level has already resulted in water entering several residential colonies, forcing families from low-lying floodplain areas to be shifted to relief camps set up by the administration.
Inflow of massive discharges from barrages
The sharp increase in water level is attributed to heavy rainfall across Delhi-NCR and northern states, along with large discharges from multiple barrages. Officials confirmed that 1.76 lakh cusecs were released from the Hathni Kund Barrage, while 69,210 cusecs were discharged from Wazirabad Barrage and another 73,619 cusecs from Okhla Barrage. These discharges collectively raised the river’s level to 205.80 metres by 8 am. Projections suggest that the Yamuna could further swell, possibly reaching 206 metres by evening, which is the evacuation mark.
Delhi reels under waterlogging and traffic chaos
The situation has worsened due to heavy overnight rainfall, which left several parts of Delhi-NCR waterlogged. Roads turned into streams, and traffic congestion was reported at multiple key junctions, including the Delhi-Gurugram border, where commuters faced severe delays. Several residents also reported floodwater entering their homes, forcing emergency evacuations.
Precautionary traffic restrictions at Loha Pul
In anticipation of worsening conditions, the Shahdara District Magistrate announced closure of the Loha Pul bridge for traffic and public movement starting 5 pm on Tuesday. Authorities stated this is a precautionary measure to avoid mishaps as the river swells further.
Government response and assurances
On Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured citizens that the government is fully prepared to handle the situation. Rescue teams, disaster management units, and medical aid facilities have been kept on standby to respond swiftly in case of emergency flooding. Residents of flood-prone zones have been urged to relocate immediately to safer areas.
Weather forecast for Delhi
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a cloudy sky with moderate rainfall for Tuesday. The maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to hover around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could settle at 22 degrees Celsius. The weather department has also warned of possible localized flooding and waterlogging due to continuous rainfall.
Delhi records wettest August in 15 years
This crisis comes after Delhi recorded its wettest August in the last 15 years. According to IMD, the city received 399.8 mm of rainfall in August 2025, surpassing most previous years. The last time Delhi recorded such high rainfall in August was in 2010, when the city received 455.8 mm. In 2024 as well, Delhi experienced exceptionally heavy rain, with 390.3 mm recorded by August 30, surpassing its annual average rainfall in just eight months.
Rising flood threat across the capital
With heavy rains continuing, barrage discharges increasing, and Yamuna crossing the danger mark, the flood threat looms large over Delhi’s low-lying areas. The government has intensified efforts to manage traffic, ensure smooth evacuation, and provide timely relief to affected families. Citizens have been urged to follow official advisories closely and avoid venturing into waterlogged or river-adjacent areas.
