In a tragic turn of events that shook the nation, a terror attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of 26 people, including Indian and foreign nationals. The incident, which took place in a remote and scenic high-altitude location accessible only via trekking or horseback, marks one of the deadliest terror incidents in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
Heightened Security in Major Indian Cities
Following the attack, India's capital New Delhi and financial hub Mumbai were placed on high alert, with similar precautions extended to Jaipur and Amritsar. Security forces have significantly increased surveillance at public spaces, tourist attractions, border checkpoints, and airports. These measures come at a crucial time, with United States Vice President JD Vance currently on a four-day official visit to India.
In Delhi, authorities heightened scrutiny at sensitive locations, including tourist hotspots, railway stations, metro stations, and transport hubs. Rapid Action Teams were deployed, and traffic diversions were implemented to manage movement around key zones.
Mumbai Police, in coordination with state intelligence units, established multiple nakabandis (roadblocks), particularly around commercial centers, transport terminals, and high-footfall areas. Officers were asked to remain on high alert with strict orders issued to Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and Senior Police Inspectors (SPIs) to maintain vigilance.
Nationwide Vigilance
This heightened state of alert wasn’t limited to Delhi and Mumbai. Jaipur authorities issued a state-wide alert, deploying additional patrol teams at major public and tourist locations such as Jaipur Junction railway station and Amer Fort. In Amritsar, the Punjab Police tightened security around the Golden Temple and increased monitoring near the Indo-Pak border.
In Uttar Pradesh, additional forces were mobilized around religious towns like Varanasi, Mathura, and Ayodhya, and public areas were put under the scanner of drone surveillance and closed-circuit cameras.
International airports, especially those in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, were instructed to enhance patrolling and to keep an eye out for suspicious passengers. Coastal security units also ramped up maritime patrols following the potential threat of infiltration.
Swift Political and Administrative Action
Union Home Minister Amit Shah flew to Srinagar soon after news of the attack broke. At Raj Bhavan, he chaired a high-level security review meeting with top officials from the Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police. Discussions centered on operational readiness, deployment logistics, and immediate counter-terrorism responses.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia, cut short his foreign tour and returned to India. He is expected to chair a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to assess the national security scenario and craft a comprehensive response. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi condemned the “heinous act” and vowed that the perpetrators would face justice.
Claim of Responsibility and Investigation
A lesser-known militant outfit named "Kashmir Resistance" has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. In an online statement, the group cited its opposition to the “settlement of outsiders” in Kashmir as the motive. Intelligence and anti-terrorism agencies are currently verifying the authenticity of the claim and working to track down the attackers, their handlers, and logistical supporters.
According to sources, the attackers were well-acquainted with the topography of Baisaran Valley and appear to have planned the assault meticulously. Investigators have recovered high-caliber weapons and ammunition from the scene, and forensic teams are working round-the-clock to analyse the site.
Historical Echoes and Global Responses
The attack has stirred painful memories of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, especially given its targeting of tourists and international citizens. The choice of a remote yet popular tourist spot has further raised concerns about vulnerabilities in security arrangements in offbeat or secluded travel destinations.
Governments across the world, including those of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have expressed solidarity with India and condemned the attack in the strongest terms. The US State Department issued a statement affirming its support for India's fight against terrorism, while also monitoring the safety of its citizens currently traveling in India.
India’s Stance and Assurance
The Indian government has reiterated that no act of terror will derail peace efforts in Kashmir. The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all state DGPs and Intelligence Bureau officials to maintain constant vigilance and be prepared for any spillover effects or secondary attacks.
Tourism in Kashmir, which has been slowly rebuilding, faces a new challenge following this attack. However, local authorities in Jammu and Kashmir remain committed to ensuring visitor safety, and have vowed not to let terror elements disrupt the region’s return to normalcy.
As the investigation deepens and security arrangements strengthen, the nation stands united in grief and determination. The tragedy of Pahalgam will not be forgotten, but neither will India’s resolve to combat and eradicate terrorism from its soil.
