What's Covered under the Article:

  1. Dense fog in Delhi-NCR severely reduced visibility, creating travel disruptions and delays.
  2. IMD attributes fog to low temperatures, humidity, and calm winds, with conditions lasting.
  3. Maximum temperature in Delhi remained below normal, with chilly conditions persisting.

Delhi-NCR experienced a dense blanket of fog on Thursday morning, severely impacting visibility and creating significant disruptions for commuters. As residents woke up to foggy conditions, visibility levels plummeted to a mere 100 meters in some areas, affecting traffic flow across the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed these conditions to a combination of low temperatures, high humidity, and calm winds, which have created an environment ripe for dense fog formation.

In areas like Palam, visibility was reduced to just 100 meters, making navigation for drivers difficult and dangerous. At Safdarjung, conditions were slightly better, with visibility at 300 meters, but still insufficient for safe travel. With the mercury dipping to 7.6°C, Delhi residents were feeling the chill, with the minimum temperature three notches below normal. The maximum temperature reached 16.2°C, indicating a significantly cooler than usual day.

The IMD has warned that these foggy conditions are expected to persist for several days, and travel disruptions will continue. Commuters have been urged to use fog lights and maintain safe distances to avoid accidents. The foggy weather is also likely to affect bus services and private vehicles, causing delays in daily travel routines.

In the midst of this chilly weather, Delhiites found themselves huddling around bonfires to fight off the cold, which was especially intense in the early morning hours. Transport services, including buses and private vehicles, were delayed, as drivers slowed their pace to avoid accidents due to the limited visibility.

Weather Data from IMD:
According to the data released by the IMD, the fog conditions were recorded at Palam at 6:30 am, where visibility dropped to just 100 meters, with westerly winds blowing at a speed of 6 kmph. In contrast, Safdarjung saw better but still limited visibility of 300 meters around 5:30 am, accompanied by calm winds. These weather conditions created a hazardous commute for early-morning travelers, with many experiencing delays in reaching their destinations.

The IMD also reported that Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 16.2°C, significantly lower than usual, which qualifies as a "cold day" as defined by the meteorological department. This temperature is nearly 4.5°C below normal for the region, indicating an unusual chill in the air.

Forecast for January:
In the coming days, the IMD predicts that minimum temperatures across India are likely to be higher than usual, except in certain regions of eastern, northwest, and west-central India. Maximum temperatures will also remain above normal in most parts of the country, though exceptions exist in northwest, central, and eastern India, and the southern peninsula. These forecasts suggest a warmer January for much of the nation, in contrast to the current cold weather in Delhi.

In terms of rainfall, the IMD's projections indicate that north India may experience below-normal rainfall from January to March, with rainfall expected to be less than 86% of the long-period average (LPA). This forecast points to dry conditions in the region, further affecting travel and outdoor activities.

As the fog continues to affect travel, commuters are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and adjust their schedules accordingly to avoid accidents. The cold and foggy conditions in Delhi-NCR are likely to persist for the next few days, with the weather department forecasting more chilly mornings ahead.
