IMD rules out a return of the heatwave this week but predicts rising temperatures again from Monday, April 14.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided a much-needed respite to Delhi-NCR residents who have been reeling under an intense heatwave. According to the latest forecast, the region is likely to experience light rainfall and thunderstorms on April 10 and 11, offering temporary relief from the scorching heat. Cloudy skies, gusty winds, and a slight drop in day and night temperatures have been predicted, providing a brief but welcome change in weather conditions.
What to Expect on April 10 and 11
The IMD has stated that Delhi and its adjoining areas including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad will witness cloudy conditions accompanied by light rain or drizzle and thunderstorms. The rainfall activity may also be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
This weather change is likely to bring relief from the prolonged heatwave conditions, which had seen daytime temperatures soar well above normal levels in early April. As per IMD data, the maximum temperature on April 10 is expected to range between 38°C and 40°C, while the minimum may hover between 24°C and 26°C.
Temperature Trend Over the Coming Days
The weather is likely to cool down slightly over the next few days. Here's a breakdown of the expected temperatures:
-
April 10 (Thursday): Max 38–40°C | Min 24–26°C
-
April 11 (Friday): Max 36–38°C | Min 23–25°C
-
April 12 (Saturday): Max 36–38°C | Min 18–20°C
While the rainfall might not be significant in terms of volume, even light showers can bring down the temperature and make the weather more tolerable for residents. The IMD has indicated that no major rain activity is expected beyond April 12, but at the same time, the heatwave is not anticipated to return during the remainder of the week.
Record-Breaking Nighttime Temperatures
Interestingly, Delhi recorded its highest minimum temperature for April in the past three years on Wednesday, April 9. The mercury settled at 25.6°C, which is 5.6 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. According to IMD records, such high nighttime temperatures are rare for early April. In comparison, the highest recorded minimum temperature in 2024 was 24°C, and in 2023, it was 23.6°C.
This sharp increase in nighttime temperatures is attributed to clear skies, low humidity, and heatwave conditions that trap heat near the surface, preventing night-time cooling. Such trends have been causing sleep disturbances, increased electricity consumption, and higher cooling demands across the NCR region.
No Immediate Heatwave, But Rising Heat from April 14
While the brief cool spell brings relief, the IMD warns that the rising temperatures may return starting Monday, April 14. Although heatwave conditions are not predicted immediately, the mercury is expected to gradually climb again, especially in the absence of further rainfall. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
Why the Sudden Weather Change?
This short-term weather shift is attributed to western disturbances, a common phenomenon during this time of year. These disturbances bring moisture-laden winds from the Mediterranean region, which interact with the warm air over northwestern India, resulting in thunderstorms and brief showers.
Experts believe such intermittent rain spells, while helpful, are not enough to offset the impact of a long heatwave. However, they provide momentary relief that allows city infrastructure, energy grids, and citizens to recover from the extreme conditions.
What Residents Should Do
As Delhiites gear up for a few relatively cooler days, IMD advises people to remain cautious. Here's what you can do:
-
Avoid staying outdoors during thunderstorms, especially under trees or in open fields.
-
Secure loose objects on balconies and rooftops as gusty winds can blow them away.
-
Ensure proper ventilation indoors and use fans or air coolers instead of air conditioners wherever possible to save energy.
-
Keep hydrated by drinking water regularly, especially for the elderly and children.
-
Check local forecasts daily, especially if you have outdoor plans or travel arrangements.
Outlook for the Week Ahead
Beyond April 12, the weather is expected to gradually return to warm and sunny conditions. However, temperatures will likely stay below heatwave thresholds until April 14, giving the region time to recuperate from the early April heat spell. No major weather system is predicted beyond the current disturbance, but the IMD will continue to monitor atmospheric changes.
In conclusion, Delhi-NCR residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the city prepares for a short-lived but welcome drop in temperatures. While the cool spell won’t last long, it is enough to break the monotony of the oppressive heatwave that has gripped the capital in recent days. Keep an umbrella handy, watch out for gusty winds, and make the most of the cooler weather while it lasts.
