What's covered under the Article:
- Delhi experiences warm temperatures reaching 27.4°C, the highest this year.
- Air quality drops back into the 'poor' category, reaching an AQI of 317.
- IMD predicts warm conditions to persist until Tuesday, with some air quality improvement expected by Wednesday.
Delhi is experiencing warm weather with temperatures reaching a high of 27.4°C on Monday, surpassing the previous highest temperature of 27°C recorded on January 31, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that warm conditions will persist until Tuesday, with the maximum temperature likely to remain around 27°C. However, the wind speeds remain low, which has impacted air quality across the city.
Temperature and Weather Conditions in Delhi
Despite the rise in daytime temperatures, Delhi's minimum temperature dropped to 7.8°C, which is two degrees below normal for this time of the year. The temperature dip compared to the previous day's 9°C is being attributed to the low wind speeds and the settling of pollutants in the atmosphere.
Delhi's Air Quality Slips Back into 'Poor' Category
With the decrease in wind speed and a lack of atmospheric movement, Delhi's air quality has worsened. After remaining in the 'moderate' category for two days, the city's air quality deteriorated again and slipped back into the 'poor' category with an AQI of 317 on Monday. This marks a sharp rise from the 152 AQI recorded at the same time on Saturday.
According to the Centre's Early Warning System for Delhi (EWS), air quality is expected to stay in the 'poor' range until Tuesday, with improvement anticipated on Wednesday when the AQI could shift to 'moderate'. However, the six-day forecast indicates that AQI levels will fluctuate between 'poor' and 'moderate' as the city continues to battle stagnant air and rising temperatures.
The CPCB classifies air quality as follows:
- 0-50: Good
- 51-100: Satisfactory
- 101-200: Moderate
- 201-300: Poor
- 301-400: Very Poor
- Above 400: Severe
Impacts of PM2.5 and Upcoming Temperatures
The primary pollutant contributing to Delhi's poor air quality is PM2.5, which has been dominating in 38 out of 39 air quality monitoring stations across the city. The increase in pollutants is linked to the stagnation of air due to low winds, which prevent the dispersal of pollution particles.
In terms of weather, Delhi's temperatures are expected to climb further, with a possibility of reaching 30°C by the end of February 2025. The highest recorded February temperature in 2024 was 29.7°C, observed on February 19. However, the all-time highest February temperature was 34.1°C, recorded on February 26, 2006.
