On May 14, 2025, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised eyebrows by questioning the involvement of US President Donald Trump in the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire. His comments came after Trump reiterated his earlier claim that the US had brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a statement that India strongly rejected.
During a public address in Saudi Arabia on May 13, Trump claimed that his administration had successfully mediated a historic ceasefire between the two countries. He also added that the use of trade discussions helped bring the two nations to the negotiating table, emphasizing his role in stopping an escalating conflict.
However, India has categorically denied these claims. Sources from India’s Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of External Affairs have clarified that the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan initiated the ceasefire talks. According to reports, the US government had not raised the issue of trade or sanctions in their diplomatic conversations with India during this time. This has led to a sharp rebuke from Indian officials, especially in light of India's longstanding stance on the Kashmir issue, which is considered an internal matter, and not open to international mediation.
In response to Trump’s statements, Jairam Ramesh posted a video of Trump's comments on social media, questioning if the US had coerced India into agreeing to the ceasefire through the use of trade and economic pressure. The Congress leader raised concerns over the possibility that India’s security interests were compromised under US pressure, especially given Trump's history of leveraging trade deals and sanctions in international negotiations.
Ramesh further asked why the Prime Minister (PM) and the External Affairs Minister (EAM) of India had not publicly addressed Trump’s statements. He questioned if these revelations meant that India had given in to external pressure, undermining the nation’s security interests.
This exchange adds fuel to the ongoing debate over international involvement in the Kashmir issue. India has long maintained that any dialogue with Pakistan will be limited to addressing terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), as expressed by PM Narendra Modi in his address to the nation following the ceasefire agreement. Modi emphasized that the discussions would not extend to Kashmir as an international issue.
The India-Pakistan ceasefire came after the launch of Operation Sindoor by India, a military action aimed at addressing heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). While the ceasefire has been welcomed for bringing much-needed peace to the region, the dispute over the mediation process and Trump’s role continues to dominate Indian political discourse.
This diplomatic tension is further complicated by the upcoming Bihar elections, with political leaders like Kanhaiya Kumar and others raising concerns about the state of national security in light of these external pressures. As the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led Mahagathbandhan prepare for the state elections, the discourse around national security and foreign diplomacy is expected to play a significant role in shaping voter sentiments.
The controversy over the ceasefire and Trump’s claims could become a key talking point in both domestic and international discussions, as the India-Pakistan relationship remains a sensitive issue.
