The ongoing friction between Dilip Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari resurfaces as Ghosh defies party expectations.
Dilip Ghosh, former state president of the BJP in West Bengal, has stirred significant controversy within the party after his visit to the newly inaugurated Jagannath Dham in Digha. During the visit, Ghosh, accompanied by his newly-wed wife, not only attended the ceremony but also met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The interaction between the two leaders, which was cordial and friendly, soon became a point of contention among BJP members, particularly because no BJP leaders were present at the inauguration event.
The meeting between Ghosh and Banerjee led to an uproar within the BJP, with several party leaders expressing their discontent over Ghosh’s actions. Party insiders revealed that the BJP leadership was unhappy with his decision to attend the event, suggesting that his actions could be seen as undermining the party's stance on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. However, in response to the criticism, Ghosh defended his visit, stating, “God chooses those who are ideal to do his work. I came here to visit the temple, not to do politics. No one can oppose God.” He further clarified that he had been invited by the government and had attended purely for religious reasons.
Despite Ghosh’s defense, the reaction within the party remained strong. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar criticized Ghosh's visit, stating, “Dilip Ghosh’s visit to Jagannath Dham is his personal decision. The party does not endorse it. Given the atrocities committed against Hindus here, such a visit appears to ignore the suffering they face.”
Ghosh, however, remained unfazed by the backlash and took to social media to make his stance clear. His comments seemed to target BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, though he did not name him directly. “If my son-in-law follows a different party, I won’t stop talking to him. I don’t do that kind of politics. I don’t need lessons from leaders who joined the BJP in 2020 or 2021. These newcomers don’t understand the BJP,” Ghosh remarked. His strong statements reflected his frustration with certain BJP leaders who, in his opinion, were trying to lecture him on the party's ideology and values, particularly regarding the RSS and Hindutva.
This outburst highlights the ongoing tensions between Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari, a relationship that has been strained for some time. Ghosh, who had been a key figure in the party during its rise in Bengal, has now found himself at odds with some of the newer leadership within the state party. In particular, Ghosh has expressed his dissatisfaction with how the BJP has fared since the departure of several MLAs, questioning why the party struggles to retain its lawmakers.
The speculation surrounding Ghosh's political future has also intensified, with many suggesting that he might defect to another party. However, Ghosh has consistently denied such claims, reiterating his allegiance to the BJP and his roots in the RSS.
On the other hand, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders took the opportunity to mock Ghosh's comments, with Kunal Ghosh, a senior TMC leader, quipping, "Today in Digha, Dilip Ghosh’s roar overshadowed even the roar of the sea." The TMC leader’s comment seemed to underscore the political significance of Ghosh’s defiant stance against the BJP leadership.
This is not the first instance where Ghosh has acted independently of the party’s directive. In the past, he has made controversial remarks, which led to warnings from the BJP leadership. The latest incident, however, brings into question the future dynamics within the BJP, particularly in West Bengal, where infighting and factionalism have been prominent. Whether this episode will have lasting political implications remains to be seen.
Ghosh's visit and the subsequent fallout underscore the challenges faced by the BJP in maintaining party unity, especially in a state as politically charged as West Bengal. The episode also raises questions about the growing influence of regional politics and the personal loyalties that sometimes supersede party ideology and directives. The ultimate resolution of the Dilip Ghosh controversy could have a significant impact on the BJP's future strategies and alliances in the state.
