In a transformative move aimed at modernizing the telecom sector, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has unveiled significant changes to the SIM card purchasing and switching process. The new regulations, aligned with the government's Digital India initiative, introduce a paperless system designed to streamline the process while bolstering security and fraud prevention.

Paperless SIM Card Process

Under the new rules, Indian users will no longer need to visit telecom stores or offices to obtain a SIM card or change their telecom operator. The process has been digitized, allowing users to complete all necessary procedures online. This shift towards a paperless system not only simplifies the user experience but also aligns with the broader goals of enhancing convenience and reducing physical paperwork.

e-KYC and Self-KYC

A major component of the reforms is the introduction of e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) and Self-KYC. These technologies enable users to verify their identity and complete the SIM acquisition process digitally:

Aadhaar-based e-KYC: Users will use their Aadhaar card for digital verification, with telecom operators validating Aadhaar details through a paperless process that incurs a nominal cost of Re 1 (including GST).

Self-KYC: This feature allows users to independently manage their KYC process through DigiLocker. Whether purchasing a new SIM or switching between prepaid and postpaid plans, users can handle verification without visiting telecom offices.

Fraud Prevention and Security

The new digital system is designed to tackle common issues associated with traditional SIM card processes, such as fraud and identity theft. By moving to a paperless format, the risk of issuing fake SIM cards is significantly reduced. This enhanced security measure is a critical step in protecting user information and ensuring the integrity of telecom services.

OTP-Based Service Switch

Another key reform is the OTP (One-Time Password) based service switch. Users can now transition between prepaid and postpaid services online without the need to visit telecom operator offices. The OTP-based verification process simplifies and secures the service switch, making it more accessible for users.
