  • Ecoreco expands e-waste recycling by 18,000 MTPA and opens 6,000 MTPA lithium-ion battery recycling unit in Vasai, near Mumbai.

  • Entire project funded through internal accruals; company remains debt-free, ensuring operational flexibility and financial strength.

  • Ecoreco becomes first Indian recycler in global TERRA network; PM Modi mentions their app ‘BookMyJunk’ in 'Mann Ki Baat'.

Eco Recycling Limited (Ecoreco), India’s leading formal e-waste recycling company, has announced a significant expansion in its operational capacity in alignment with the country’s evolving environmental regulations. On July 18, 2025, the company informed the stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) about its strategic move to enhance e-waste processing capacity by 18,000 MTPA and set up a dedicated 6,000 MTPA facility for lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery recycling.

The new facility is spread across 40,000 sq. ft. in Vasai, a well-connected industrial zone near Mumbai. This facility is designed to process various types of e-waste and Li-ion batteries, catering to the increasing demand created by the E-waste Management Rules, 2022, which mandate Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for electronic product manufacturers and producers.

Strategic Investment with Zero Debt

In a noteworthy development, Ecoreco has financed this entire expansion through internal accruals. There is no debt involvement, reaffirming the company’s zero-debt status, which enhances its financial resilience and provides operational flexibility unmatched by competitors.

By avoiding interest and EMI obligations, Ecoreco positions itself to maintain better margins, invest more into R&D, and ensure agility in scaling operations as regulatory requirements and recycling volumes grow.

Supporting Regulatory Shifts and National Mandates

This capacity enhancement comes at a time when the EPR obligation submission process has been centralized via a national EPR Portal, and Environmental Compensation (EC) penalties for non-compliance have become active. These reforms are expected to accelerate the formalization of India's e-waste sector, weeding out informal, hazardous operations and boosting the role of licensed recyclers like Ecoreco.

The new facility’s Li-ion battery unit addresses the urgent need for sustainable disposal and recycling of lithium batteries, which are fast becoming a dominant component in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage.

Global Recognition through TERRA Membership

In a significant milestone for the Indian recycling industry, Ecoreco has been inducted into TERRA (The Electronics Reuse & Recycling Alliance) — a prestigious global alliance of certified recyclers. TERRA members are known for their adherence to highest environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, particularly R2, R2v3, and e-Stewards certifications.

Ecoreco is now the first and only Indian company to gain TERRA membership, which enhances its credibility among international clients, regulators, and ESG-focused investors.

Prime Ministerial Recognition of BookMyJunk App

Adding to the company’s credibility and visibility, Ecoreco’s mobile app ‘BookMyJunk’ received an honourable mention from Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio address. This recognition highlights Ecoreco's innovation and its role in advancing India’s green economy agenda.

The app simplifies doorstep e-waste collection for households and small businesses, ensuring proper tracking, segregation, and environmentally sound recycling of discarded electronics.

Comprehensive Recycling and EPR Services

Ecoreco offers a full-spectrum suite of e-waste services under one roof. These include:

  • Pan-India e-waste collection and logistics

  • State-of-the-art recycling of electronics and batteries

  • Data destruction services

  • Product refurbishment

  • Full-service EPR compliance for producers

The company adheres to global best practices, serving ESG-compliant producers and brand-conscious clients from various sectors including IT, telecom, BFSI, FMCG, and government.

Strategic Advantage in a Growing Market

India's e-waste generation is projected to cross 5 million metric tonnes per annum in the next few years. With the formal sector gaining strength and regulatory penalties tightening, Ecoreco’s proactive move places it at the forefront of sustainable electronic waste management.

Its ability to scale through internal funding, meet emerging battery recycling demands, and operate within a regulatory-compliant framework gives it a unique advantage.

Furthermore, as Li-ion battery usage in electric vehicles and solar backup systems grows, dedicated recycling capacity like Ecoreco’s Vasai facility becomes crucial for India’s circular economy goals.

Ecoreco’s Mission: Sustainability, Innovation, and Service to the Nation

Chairman and MD K Soni reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability, saying:

“We remain committed to creating long-term value for all stakeholders while contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.”

By combining financial prudence, regulatory alignment, and technological innovation, Ecoreco is not only addressing India’s pressing waste challenges but also emerging as a global force in responsible recycling.

Conclusion

Ecoreco's latest capacity expansion and investment into Li-ion battery recycling come at a time when India’s electronic waste volumes are accelerating rapidly. The company’s internal funding approach, regulatory readiness, and global certification make it a model player in the Indian recycling ecosystem.

With increasing recognition — from the Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat to global networks like TERRA — Ecoreco is well-positioned to lead India into a cleaner, greener, and circular future.
