The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday launched raids at 14 locations in Chhattisgarh, targeting former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, his son Chaitanya Baghel, and others in connection with a ₹2,100 crore liquor scam. The searches, which began early in the morning, are focused on suspected money laundering and illicit liquor sales that allegedly took place during Baghel’s tenure from 2018 to 2023.

According to sources, the liquor scam revolves around illegal revenue generation through the sale of illicit liquor in the state. Reports suggest that during Baghel’s tenure, certain groups within the liquor trade operated an unauthorized network, allegedly siphoning off state revenue and laundering money.

The ED's case is based on findings from the Income Tax (IT) department, which had earlier alleged that high-ranking officials and political figures benefited from illegal commissions on liquor sales.
