Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, took to his platform X to denounce the legislation as a "disgusting abomination," claiming it was rushed through Congress with no transparency or consultation.

The conflict has drawn significant attention due to Musk's previous political alignment with Trump, including a massive $250 million campaign donation and his former role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during Trump’s tenure. Now, however, the relationship between the two figures appears to be irreparably damaged, revealing deep fractures within the Republican power structure.

Musk’s Explosive Criticism of the GOP Tax Bill

Musk’s critique stems from the bill’s provisions that could reduce federal subsidies for electric vehicles—a key revenue and growth area for Tesla. In a series of sharply worded posts, Musk accused lawmakers of betraying the American people and claimed, “This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brushed off Musk’s criticisms, maintaining that Trump’s stance remains unchanged and that he had long been aware of Musk’s opposition.

On the other side of the aisle, Democrats seized on the internal Republican chaos, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries even displaying a printout of Musk’s post during a press conference. “We’re in complete agreement,” Jeffries said, highlighting bipartisan opposition to the tax bill’s funding mechanisms, which include cutbacks in Medicaid, food aid, and green energy support.

Musk’s Political Standing: A Shifting Influence?

Musk has long maintained an unorthodox political identity, supporting causes on both sides of the aisle. He played a major advisory role during Trump’s transition and once championed policies that aligned with Republican goals on regulatory simplification and economic growth.

However, his current political influence appears to be in transition. Musk recently announced plans to cut campaign contributions, stating that he would only re-engage “if I see a reason.” Despite this, his massive following and media presence ensure that his political voice remains significant, particularly among younger, tech-savvy voters.
