Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft-backed OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of straying from the company's original goal of developing AI for the broader benefit of humanity. Both OpenAI and Microsoft have yet to respond to the allegations, setting the stage for a significant legal battle between two influential figures in the tech industry amidst heightened speculation about the future of artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk has initiated legal action against Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, among others, alleging a departure from the company’s original mission of developing artificial intelligence for the greater good of humanity.

In a lawsuit filed on Thursday in a San Francisco court, Musk's legal team outlined that in 2015, he was approached by Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman to establish a nonprofit laboratory aimed at advancing artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

Although Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, he resigned from the board in 2018, expressing concerns about the potential dangers of AI, likening it to being potentially more hazardous than nuclear weapons.

The lawsuit contends that despite OpenAI's outward commitment to advancing AI for the betterment of humanity, the organization has evolved into a closed-source entity effectively operating as a subsidiary of Microsoft, the world's largest technology company.

Musk's legal team asserts that OpenAI's shift towards prioritizing profits for Microsoft violates the original agreement. They claim that instead of developing artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity, OpenAI is now focused on refining AGI to maximize profits for Microsoft.

OpenAI and Microsoft were not immediately available for comment regarding the lawsuit.

Musk's lawyers emphasized that the legal action was taken to ensure OpenAI adheres to its founding principles and returns to its original mission of developing AGI for the betterment of humanity, rather than serving the personal interests of individual defendants and a corporate giant like Microsoft.
