Experts urge caution in using taurine supplements, especially during leukemia treatment
Energy drinks have surged in popularity worldwide, often consumed for their energizing effects. However, a recent study published in Nature has uncovered a potentially alarming connection between a common energy drink ingredient, taurine, and the progression of blood cancer — specifically leukemia.
Taurine’s Role in Leukemia Progression
Taurine is an amino acid naturally found in proteins such as meat and fish. It is widely added to energy drinks to boost performance and alertness. The new research from the University of Rochester shows that taurine may actually promote leukemogenesis — the development and progression of leukemia cells — by acting as a key regulator of myeloid malignancies, a class of blood cancers.
In experiments conducted on mice, cancer cells were shown to actively consume taurine, which triggered glycolysis — a metabolic process that breaks down glucose to produce energy. This energy supply then fueled the cancer cells, accelerating disease progression. The study reported a roughly threefold increase in the likelihood of death among taurine-supplemented mice, strongly indicating taurine’s role in speeding up leukemia.
Taurine: A Double-Edged Sword
Interestingly, taurine has also been found beneficial in some contexts. Previous studies, including those cited in the Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics, highlighted taurine’s potential to reduce chemotherapy side effects due to its antioxidant properties. This dual nature makes taurine’s role complex — while it might protect healthy cells during treatment, it could simultaneously aid cancer cell growth.
The researchers caution that taurine’s widespread use in energy drinks and as a chemotherapy supplement necessitates careful evaluation of its risks and benefits, particularly for leukemia patients.
What is Leukemia?
Leukemia is a form of blood cancer originating in the bone marrow, the site where blood cells are produced. It is characterised by an abnormal and rapid proliferation of immature white blood cells called blasts or leukemia cells. These dysfunctional cells impede the production of healthy red blood cells and platelets, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, frequent infections, and easy bleeding.
Public Health Implications
Given the rising consumption of energy drinks, especially among younger populations, this study signals a need for greater awareness about potential health risks associated with taurine. Medical experts recommend that leukemia patients and high-risk individuals consult healthcare professionals before using taurine supplements or energy drinks
