A series of explosions on three parked buses in Bat Yam, Israel, has sparked concerns of a militant attack, authorities confirmed. While no injuries were reported, Israeli security forces have launched an intensive investigation into the incident, which has drawn comparisons to past attacks during the Palestinian uprising in the 2000s.
Explosions and Immediate Response
The explosions occurred on Thursday evening, rattling the city of Bat Yam, located near Tel Aviv. Israeli police and bomb disposal units swiftly responded, cordoning off the area and scanning for additional threats. Officials confirmed that explosives were also found on two other buses but did not detonate.
Police spokesman Asi Aharoni, speaking to Channel 13 TV, revealed that five identical bombs with timers were found. Bomb squads are actively defusing the undetonated devices while forensic experts analyze the burned-out remains of the affected buses.
Security Alert and Public Warning
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, warning against suspicious objects in public areas. The police emphasized that the incident is being treated as a suspected militant attack, although investigations are ongoing to determine whether a single perpetrator was responsible or if there were multiple suspects involved.
"The fact that there were no casualties is nothing short of a miracle," said Bat Yam Mayor Tzvika Brot. He added that the buses had been parked after completing their routes, reducing the risk of casualties.
Terrorism Concerns Amid Hamas Hostage Deal
The timing of the explosions has raised further concerns, as they coincided with Israel’s national mourning over the return of the bodies of four hostages from Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal with Hamas. The incident has reignited fears of renewed attacks, reminiscent of past suicide bombings and bus attacks during the Palestinian uprising.
The bus company operating in Bat Yam has ordered an immediate safety inspection of all buses, ensuring that no additional threats remain. "Drivers were instructed to halt services and check their vehicles thoroughly," said Ofir Karni, head of the bus company. Bus operations resumed only after security clearance was granted.
Investigation Underway: Shin Bet Takes Charge
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been receiving security updates and is closely monitoring the situation. The Shin Bet internal security agency has taken over the investigation, collaborating with local police to analyze security footage, forensic evidence, and potential terrorist affiliations.
Police spokesperson Haim Sargrof stated, "We need to determine if a single suspect placed explosives on multiple buses, or if this was a coordinated effort involving multiple attackers."
As security forces tighten surveillance across key locations, Israeli intelligence is working to identify possible suspects and prevent future attacks.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Israel, as authorities remain on high alert for potential terror threats in the region.
