On December 5, 2024, Devendra Fadnavis took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the third term, marking a remarkable political comeback after a significant setback in 2019. In 2019, Fadnavis had dramatically promised his return with the famous Hindi couplet:
"Mera paani utarte dekh kinare par ghar mat bana lena, main samandar hoon, laut kar vapis aaunga."
(Thinking the tide has ebbed, don't you dare build your house on the coast; for I am the sea, and I will come back).
At that time, Fadnavis was leader of opposition in the Maharashtra assembly, addressing his political rival Uddhav Thackeray, who had become the chief minister at the time. The BJP’s estranged alliance with Shiv Sena (led by Uddhav Thackeray) had crumbled, and Fadnavis, who was widely seen as politically defeated, promised to return stronger.
A Political Comeback: From Opposition to Chief Minister Again
Fast forward to 2024, and Devendra Fadnavis's political prophecy has come true. As Maharashtra prepares for the swearing-in ceremony in Mumbai, Fadnavis stands poised to take over as Chief Minister once again, this time leading the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance to a resounding victory.
The Mahayuti alliance, under Fadnavis' leadership, claimed 235 seats out of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, with the BJP securing 132 seats — the highest among all the alliance partners. The Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP also played pivotal roles, securing 57 and 41 seats, respectively. This massive victory has reduced the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which was once the ruling alliance, to a mere opposition faction, with just about 50 seats in the assembly.
As the BJP's core committee endorsed his leadership, Fadnavis was unanimously elected as the Leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party, solidifying his role as the Chief Minister once again.
Fadnavis's Long Journey in Maharashtra Politics
Fadnavis, a prominent figure in both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been a defining political force in Maharashtra. He first contested an assembly election in 1999, emerging victorious as a member of the Nagpur West constituency. Later, he represented Nagpur South West since 2009, a seat he successfully defended in the 2024 elections.
Fadnavis's political career reached new heights when he became the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra from October 31, 2014, to November 12, 2019. At just 44 years old, he was the second-youngest Chief Minister in Maharashtra's history, after Sharad Pawar. His tenure as CM was marked by both accomplishments and challenges, but his resignation in 2019 after a brief stint highlighted the unpredictable dynamics of Maharashtra politics.
In 2022, Fadnavis made a strategic return to power as the deputy CM of Maharashtra in the Shiv Sena-led government. Now, in 2024, he is again at the helm, this time as the CM of Maharashtra, a position he is set to occupy for a third term.
The BJP's Commanding Victory
The BJP’s triumph in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections is seen as a testament to Fadnavis' resilience and political acumen. Despite facing adversities and ridicule in the past, Fadnavis has demonstrated unwavering leadership, propelling the BJP to a dominant position in the state. The party’s performance in the elections has significantly shifted the political landscape, with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a once powerful alliance, now relegated to opposition status. The alliance’s 50 seats in the assembly will likely leave it without a leader of opposition post, further diminishing its influence.
The Mahayuti alliance, spearheaded by Fadnavis, has brought together a broad coalition, with BJP, Shinde Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP working in concert. The victory reflects the strong political base of the BJP and its ability to garner widespread support across the state.

Fadnavis: A Unifying Figure in Maharashtra Politics
Fadnavis’s leadership is seen as a unifying force within Maharashtra’s complex political landscape. His tenure as both CM and deputy CM has cemented his reputation as a capable and decisive leader. Fadnavis’s political journey and his latest victory come as a reminder of his undying resolve and ability to navigate the intricacies of coalition politics in Maharashtra.
With Fadnavis now returning to power as Chief Minister, his third-term oath marks the culmination of a significant chapter in Maharashtra politics, where his predictions of returning to power have finally materialized.
