At that time, Fadnavis was leader of opposition in the Maharashtra assembly, addressing his political rival Uddhav Thackeray, who had become the chief minister at the time. The BJP’s estranged alliance with Shiv Sena (led by Uddhav Thackeray) had crumbled, and Fadnavis, who was widely seen as politically defeated, promised to return stronger.

At just 44 years old, he was the second-youngest Chief Minister in Maharashtra's history, after Sharad Pawar.
