The United States government has entered a new and volatile phase of the ongoing shutdown crisis, as President Donald Trump announced the firing of federal workers, claiming the move is necessary to “end Democratic obstruction” in Washington. The decision, which immediately drew backlash from lawmakers, unions, and civil rights groups, marks one of the most controversial actions of Trump’s current term.

Speaking from the White House, Trump confirmed that his administration had begun terminating federal employees in what he called a “strategic step” to put pressure on Democrats in Congress to approve his government funding plan. The President emphasised that the layoffs would primarily affect departments and agencies he described as “Democrat-controlled or Democrat-influenced.”

The White House, however, claims it has the authority to dismiss workers in non-essential or budget-dependent positions during a shutdown.

Legal scholars have also cautioned that Trump’s remarks suggesting the firings target “Democrat-oriented areas” could be used as evidence of political bias, making the administration vulnerable to lawsuits.

Reports indicate that the Department of Education, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Endowment for the Arts are among the first agencies impacted by the layoffs. Public Reaction and Protests

Across the country, federal workers and activists have begun organising protests against the firings. Demonstrations took place outside Capitol Hill, where affected employees carried signs reading “Stop Political Firings” and “Public Service, Not Partisanship.”

Some federal contractors have also joined the protests, expressing fear that their jobs could be next.
