- Folk singer Devi apologised after protests erupted during her rendition of a Gandhi bhajan at an event for Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- Protests were triggered by the stanza "Ishwar Allah tero naam," which hurt the feelings of some attendees.
- Senior political leaders, including Lalu Yadav and Shahnawaz Hussain, reacted, with some condemning the incident as an example of intolerance.
At a function commemorating the life of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Patna, a folk singer Devi was forced to apologise after protests broke out during her performance. The singer had been requested by the event organisers to sing a bhajan, and in line with the occasion, she chose to sing "Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram", a song famously associated with Mahatma Gandhi. However, during the performance, when she reached the stanza "Ishwar Allah tero naam", a section of the audience began protesting vehemently, causing her to stop and later apologise for causing any distress.
The protests were reportedly sparked by the mention of both Ishwar and Allah in the same line, which some attendees felt was inappropriate. The incident was widely discussed on social media, with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Yadav expressing his displeasure over the protests. He described the protestors as "petty people" with limited understanding, adding that the bhajan was closely associated with Gandhi's principles and should not have caused such a reaction. He further commented that the bhajan singer Devi was forced to apologise due to the protests.
Shahnawaz Hussain, a BJP leader and former Union Minister, also weighed in on the matter, calling the protests a "height of intolerance." Hussain, while recalling a quote from Atal Bihari Vajpayee, emphasised that the protests were unbecoming and demonstrated a lack of tolerance, making him feel embarrassed and ashamed. He stated that Atal ji would have been disappointed by such reactions, as the late leader had always advocated for inclusivity and open-mindedness.
The incident sparked widespread debate about cultural intolerance and religious sentiments. Critics argued that the protests against a Gandhi bhajan were indicative of growing intolerance in India. They noted that the song's lyrics, which include the names of both Hindu and Muslim deities, are meant to symbolise unity, and disrupting such expressions was a sign of societal division. Some saw the protests as an attack on Gandhian values that espoused secularism and communal harmony.
This controversy comes amid rising tensions around issues of religion and secularism in India, where expressions of unity often clash with partisan beliefs. The bhajan, traditionally sung in an effort to promote peace and harmony, became a flashpoint for a larger conversation about the country’s cultural and religious climate.
