Former Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar officially joined the BJP on Friday, following his expulsion from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

The BJD expelled Kumar for "anti-party activities", shortly after he resigned from the Rajya Sabha, expressing disappointment over his actions.

Kumar, in his resignation letter, expressed gratitude for the opportunities to represent Odisha, despite the political shift.

In a significant political development, Sujeet Kumar, former Rajya Sabha MP from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. This move comes on the heels of his expulsion from the BJD, which occurred shortly after he submitted his resignation from the Rajya Sabha.

The expulsion of Sujeet Kumar from the BJD was a reaction to what the party termed as "anti-party activities". In a statement, the BJD expressed its disappointment, emphasizing that Kumar had "let down the party" that had nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. BJD president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik criticized Kumar for failing to meet the expectations of the people of Kalahandi, his represented district.

The official statement from the BJD highlighted Kumar's failure to uphold the party's principles and the aspirations of the people of Kalahandi. It declared, "Sujeet Kumar, MP, Rajya Sabha, representing Biju Janata Dal is expelled from the party with immediate effect for anti-party activities. He has let down the party which sent him to Rajya Sabha and the hopes and aspirations of the people of Kalahandi district."

In his resignation letter to the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Kumar stated that his decision was made "consciously". He took the opportunity to express his profound gratitude for the chance to address public issues and represent the state of Odisha in the House. Kumar's resignation letter read, "I take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to you for the opportunities provided to me to raise issues of public importance, and of my state Odisha, in the House."

Following his expulsion, Kumar joined the BJP in a ceremony held in Delhi, attended by senior BJP leaders including Vijaypal Singh Tomar, the Odisha in-charge of the party. This move marks a notable shift in Kumar’s political career and reflects ongoing changes within the Indian political landscape.
