Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has passed away at the age of 85, after a prolonged battle with heart disease. Fondly known as Pak Lah, Abdullah's death on April 14, 2025, at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur marks the end of an era for Malaysia's political landscape. He had been hospitalized in April 2024 for a spontaneous pneumothorax, a condition that caused his lung to collapse, and had undergone intensive treatment for his heart condition. Despite these efforts, Abdullah succumbed to his health issues at 7:10 p.m.

Abdullah served as Malaysia's fifth prime minister from 2003 to 2009. He succeeded Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's long-time leader, and was hailed for bringing a more moderate and reform-oriented approach to governance. His leadership was characterized by a softer tone compared to his predecessor, emphasizing political openness, anti-corruption reforms, and a moderate stance on Islam. Abdullah’s policies were initially welcomed, with a landslide victory in the 2004 general election signaling public approval of his approach.

A key aspect of his tenure was his efforts to balance modernity and tradition in Islamic governance, promoting moderate Islam as a central theme of his administration. His government also sought to promote transparency and institutional reforms, making it a period of significant political experimentation in Malaysia. Abdullah's softer style was seen as a departure from the more authoritarian policies of Mahathir, and he hoped to provide a more open, accountable government.

However, as time passed, Abdullah’s leadership faced mounting challenges. The promised reforms faltered, with critics pointing to a lack of follow-through on institutional changes and rising allegations of nepotism involving his family, particularly his son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin, who became a prominent figure in Malaysian politics. Despite these criticisms, Abdullah remained a popular figure among many Malaysians who appreciated his moderate approach to governance.

The pivotal moment of Abdullah's tenure came during the 2008 general election, when the ruling coalition, led by his United Malays National Organization (UMNO), suffered its worst-ever defeat. The National Front coalition lost its two-thirds parliamentary majority and lost control of five state governments. This was seen as a direct response to growing public dissatisfaction with his administration. Under immense pressure from his party, Abdullah eventually resigned in 2009, passing the baton to his successor Najib Razak.

Abdullah’s resignation marked the end of a brief but significant period of moderate reform in Malaysia. While some critics saw him as a weak administrator, Abdullah’s tenure remains notable for its emphasis on political openness, moderation, and attempts at anti-corruption efforts.

Born on November 26, 1939, in Penang, Abdullah came from a religious background. He earned a degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Malaya and began his career in public service before transitioning to politics in 1978. He was involved in a significant party rift with Mahathir during the early years but later returned to the fold, rising through the ranks of UMNO.

In 2005, Abdullah lost his beloved wife Endon Mahmood to cancer, a loss that deeply affected him. He remarried to Jeanne Abdullah, and together they had a family. Abdullah is survived by his two children, stepchildren, and grandchildren. While some may consider his time in office a missed opportunity for further reform, Abdullah's legacy as a figure who sought a more open, moderate path in Malaysia’s politics remains a significant chapter in the country's history.
